Dr. Paul Kalanithi was at the point of completing his training to become a neurosurgeon when suddenly he was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. Paul’s moving memoir is his story of becoming a patient as he wrestled with suffering and loss, as well as love and hope. Paul’s wife, Dr. Lucy Kalanithi, completed his memoir after Paul died in 2015. ADU was fortunate to secure a speaking engagement by Lucy Kalanithi on December 8, 2016, in which she speaks openly about her husband, their relationship, and what sustained them at the end of his life. You will enjoy learning from their journey and come away with a better understanding of how life changing medical diagnoses changes relationships with others, with self and with God. You will be challenged to consider how suffering and love are related. This story and what you will learn from hearing from Dr. Lucy Kalanithi will be life changing for you and the way you care for others.

Drawing insight from Christian scripture, microbiology, and business leaders, Dr. Hunter engages the theme of Integrity from all sides.

Dr. Rita Charon, who holds both the MD degree as well as PhD in English, speaks from the perspective of narrative medicine as she explores the topic of Integrity. In a powerful story of love and courage in the midst of terrible violence, Carl Wilkens and his wife Teresa bear witness to the history of genocide in Rwanda in the early 1990s. Wilkens weaves footage from a documentary of their experience with his account of the family’s development and relief work in Rwanda prior to the genocide, and relief work after. Wilkens was the sole American who remained in the country during the violence.

Two speakers share lived experiences from the Holocaust, Dr. Fogelman, a psychologist and daughter of a Jewish baker protected by a Russian, and Rabbi Goldstein who survived more than two years in Auschwitz Concentration Camp. Dr. Fogelman’s personal search and professional journey has explored The Rescuers, “the Righteous Among the Nations,” non-Jews who risked their lives to rescue Jews. Rabbi Goldstein recalls historical events of the Holocaust through his own and his family’s experience; both are gripping accounts.

While simulation is mostly used in aviation, healthcare and military applications, this session will demonstrate how simulation is being infused into numerous settings. Participating in Polycom education at AHU offers faculty the unique opportunity to develop practices and tools that facilitate collaborative, active learning environments in any classroom.
