Details

The Fieldwork Educator Training Seminar is designed for Occupational Therapy Practitioners who will be supervising Occupational Therapy or Occupational Therapy Assistant Students in clinical practice settings. This seminar provides foundational preparation for the role of fieldwork educator by reviewing expectations, supervisory responsibilities, and best practices for supporting student learning in real-world environments. Participants will explore effective strategies for mentorship, communication, evaluation, and professional role modeling while aligning supervision practices with current accreditation standards and fieldwork requirements. The seminar aims to equip clinicians with the knowledge and confidence needed to facilitate meaningful, high-quality fieldwork experiences for students.

Event Objectives:

Upon Completion of this seminar, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the benefits of taking students.
  • Identify the various challenges that may be present when working with students.
  • Understand the ADA and student supervision requirements.
  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of the various stakeholders in the fieldwork experiences.
  • Identify the differences between Level I and Level II Fieldwork.
  • Discuss what to do in the event of a student failing the fieldwork experience.

Accreditation: This course has been approved for 4 hours of continuing education.

Presenters

Angela Sampson, MHA, OTR/L, AFWC-OTA
Angela Sampson joined the AHU OTA faculty as an Academic Fieldwork Coordinator and Pediatrics Instructor in January 2015. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy in 1998 from Loma Linda University, School of Allied Health Professions, located in Loma Linda, CA. She completed her Master of Healthcare Administration degree with an emphasis in Strategy and Innovation in 2024. She started and maintained a private occupational therapy practice providing pediatric therapy services in North Carolina before relocating to Florida in 2013. Her primary clinical focus has been as a pediatric occupational therapist, providing various services in the clinic, home, and school settings and supervising Level I and II students. She is passionate about providing services to the Early Intervention population and is trained in delivering Oral Motor and Feeding therapy.

Alexis Thompson, MOT, OTR/L
Ms. Thompson earned her Bachelor of Science in Health Education and Behavior from the University of Florida and her Master of Occupational Therapy from AdventHealth University. Her primary area of clinical expertise is the evaluation and treatment of patients across the lifespan in the hospital setting. She began her career at Nemours Children's Hospital, where she treated patients in the acute care, inpatient rehabilitation, and outpatient settings with an emphasis on neurological trauma, stroke, and spinal cord injury.  She then moved to AdventHealth Orlando, where she specialized in acute care adult and pediatric rehabilitation in critical care settings, particularly the cardiac ICU. She has specialized training in therapeutic techniques for patients on various forms of cardiac life support, including ECMO, and neonatal intensive care. Her responsibilities within AdventHealth University’s Master of Occupational Therapy department include teaching the Geriatric and Adult practice classes, fieldwork coordination, and supervising student scholarship projects. Her primary research interests include interprofessional collaboration in the hospital, occupational therapy's role in critical care, delirium management, and educational methods to improve student preparation for work in intensive care.
