This April, we’re excited to offer an immersive education event focused on labor and delivery as well as postpartum emergencies. Dr. Santiago-Tapia will lead the session with an in-depth presentation on postpartum complications, providing essential insights for early recognition and effective management. Following the lecture, our simulation team will challenge participants with realistic, high-acuity labor and delivery scenarios designed to strengthen clinical decision-making, teamwork, and confidence in responding to obstetric emergencies.

Objectives:

Postpartum Emergencies - Dr. Cecille Tapia-Santiago

  • Describe the causes of PP hemorrhage.
  • Review the clinical presentation.
  • Discuss the treatment options.
  • Discuss the different types of hypertensive emergencies.
  • Discuss the clinical presentation and treatment options for these emergencies.

Labor and Delivery Emergencies - Chad Corliss, RN

  • Identify clinical signs of shoulder dystocia (e.g., “turtle sign,” failure of restitution).
  • Communicate immediate recognition of the emergency using standardized language.
  • Correctly identify signs of cord prolapse on exam or fetal monitoring.
  • Immediately announce the emergency using appropriate terminology.
