Our focus in January's Advanced Emergent Airway Management in EMS is to equip EMS providers with advanced knowledge, skills, and decision-making strategies for managing emergent airway situations in the prehospital environment. This training emphasizes rapid assessment, safe intervention, and evidence-based techniques—including advanced ventilation strategies, such as CPAP and BiPAP—to improve patient outcomes during critical airway emergencies.
Objectives:
- Assess and identify airway emergencies through recognition indications for advanced airway intervention in trauma, medical, and pediatric patients.
- Apply advanced airway techniques in advanced airway devices e.g. video, laryngoscopy, supraglottic airways, and surgical airway.
- Implement non-invasive ventilation strategies through the understanding of the physiology and indications for CPAP and BiPAP in respiratory distress - CHF, COPD, asthma.
- Optimize airway management under stress.
- Integrate a team based approach in coordinating effectively with other EMS team members during high-acuity airway interventions and communicate critical information to receiving facilities for continuity of care.
- Ensure patient safety and quality when applying evidence-based guidelines to minimize complication such as hypoxia, aspiration, and unrecognized esophageal intubation.
