The Medical Laser Safety Officer (LSO) Concept Applications for the Perioperative Environment Course provides training on all aspects of medical and surgical lasers. This course consists of both didactic presentations and hands-on practice in a laboratory setting, all led by experience and expert faculty. The topics discussed and practiced include fundamentals of laser physics, tissue interactions, safety compliance, role and responsibilities of Medical LSOs, application of principals, identifying hazards, scenario discussions, Pearls of Wisdom, patient airway safety, overview of common laser devices, and the application of commonly used lasers. The hands-on laboratory provides practice identifying key features, implementing safety measures in a medical setting, accessories, control panel, delivery system, team communication skills, and target effects with the use of medical/surgical lasers.

 

  • Discuss laser lights and how they are generated. 
  • Describe the ways in which lasers interact with biological tissue. 
  • Identify the most common lasers currently used in the medical field and their functions. 
  • Examine the hazards and risks associated with utilizing lasers in the healthcare setting. 
  • Identify the categories of lasers based on risk to the safety of patients and personnel. 
  • Discuss guidelines and standards available to assist the Medical Laser Safety Officer. 
  • Identify ways to manage the risks associated with the use of medical/surgical lasers. 
  • Describe the fundamentals of identifying risks in the healthcare setting and operating suites. 
  • Identify common activities and equipment used to mitigate laser safety in the healthcare setting. 
  • Discuss the role and responsibilities of the facility Medical Laser Safety Officer (LSO).
