In this course, multiple systematic reviews and articles will be shared that examine the latest evidence for interventions commonly used in pediatric practice. The intervention technique discussion will include: Handwriting and Sensory Processing. AOTA Practice Guidelines will be reviewed to support best practices in service delivery when working with children who have deficits in these areas. Additionally, a university librarian will be present to demonstrate the use of search engines and key terminology needed to find evidence to support our practice.
Learning Outcomes:
- At the conclusion of this course, the learner will be able to articulate why evidence-based practice is important for pediatric occupational therapists.
- At the conclusion of this course, the learner will be able to utilize various search engines to research the latest evidence on a variety of topics relevant to occupational therapy practice.
- At the conclusion of this course the learner will be able to describe various pediatric interventions and the evidence behind these techniques, according to the most recent research.

Dr. Dudzinski is a Level I Certified Handwriting Specialist through "Handwriting Without Tears". She graduated from Loma Linda University with Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Therapy in 1998. She then pursued a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Central Florida, followed by Masters Degree in health Sciences from the University of Florida. In 2020, she completed her educational journey at UCF, obtaining a Doctor of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction. Her clinical background primarily consists of pediatric experience. She spent 13 years providing educationally relevant therapy services as a school-based practitioner for Orange County Public Schools, where she worked as both a treating therapist and an OT diagnostician. Her passion for clinical education at OCPS led her to AdventHealth University in 2013, where she served as the Academic Fieldwork Coordinator for 9 years. Kim currently teaches full-time for the MOT program at AHU. Her research areas of interest vary widely, spanning from pediatric areas of occupational development such as handwriting and visual motor skills to the sensory processing needs of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Ms. Painter is an instructor in the Master’s of Occupational Therapy program. Her roles include Academic Fieldwork Coordinator, teaching Applied Kinesiology and Neuroscience Applications for OT courses, and supervising graduate scholarship projects. Her research interests include neurorehabilitation and pediatrics. She graduated from Barry University in 2015 with a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy. She has plans to pursue a doctoral degree. Ms. Painter has worked in outpatient pediatrics where she gained extended training in sensory-based feeding approaches for problem feeders. Prior to transitioning into her current academic role, she worked at AdventHealth – Orlando providing acute care occupational therapy services for adults on the Neurology, Oncology, General Surgery, and Behavioral Health units as well as Pediatrics and Neonatal Intensive Care units.
Dr. Kristy Bautista-Harris is currently the Lead Occupational Therapist and Diagnostician for all Orange County UCP Charter Schools. She earned an Bachelor of Science degree in Health Administration and Master of Science degree in Occupational Therapy from Barry University, Miami. She earned her Post-Professional Doctorate in Occupational Therapy at the University of St. Augustine. Kristy has over 20 years of clinical experience in a variety of settings and populations from pediatrics to adults. She has had the opportunity to work in many settings throughout the continuum of her career including inpatient hospitals, outpatient clinics, home health, schools, and community-based settings. She has specialized within the domain of neurorehabilitation, becoming Neurodevelopmental Treatment (NDT) certified. This approach has been pivotal for enhancing and treating patients with neurological conditions, including children and adults. She is also a certified Handwriting specialist by the Handwriting Without Tears (HWT) program. The HWT program which has brought the knowledge and need of handwriting development within our school environment. She has based her pediatric practice through sensory integrative strategies while emphasizing building long learning skills and independence in all children academic and social skills.
