Human slavery has always existed; with the popularity of social media the awareness of human trafficking is gaining recognition throughout the world and we are now recognizing its prevalence in the United States. As healthcare and mental health professionals it is essential that we acquire the knowledge, training, and skills in conjunction with human trafficking; this course will increase your level of awareness and knowledge about human trafficking.

Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

  • Define human trafficking and the forms of human trafficking.
  • List vulnerabilities that place individuals at increased risk of becoming a victim of human trafficking.
  • Identify general indicators that a person may be a victim of human trafficking.
  • Apply screening questions that can be utilized to identify victims of human trafficking.
  • Describe health consequences of human trafficking.
  • Discuss social service programs available to human trafficking victims.

Presenter Biography

Imelda Unto provides executive leadership as the Vice President & Chief Nursing Officer at AdventHealth Ocala. She received her Bachelor’s in Nursing from the University of San Carlos in the Philippines and earned her Master of Science in Nursing at Loyola University in New Orleans. Imelda is furthering her expertise as a current Doctor of Nursing Practice student at Loyola University.

She has 14+ years of experience in designing and leading quality, patient safety, and process improvement initiatives throughout the United States and the Philippines. Imelda spent 3 years as the Regional Administrator of Oncology Service Line, a 6-hospital comprehensive and community-based cancer program for the Florida Hospital, Central Division, North Region and prior to that she was Director of the University of Illinois Comprehensive Cancer Center, Senior Director of Clinical Operation for the State of Illinois. In her current role with AdventHealth Imelda ensures patient safety through the facilitation of quality initiatives in education and practice for the healthcare team. Imelda exemplifies AdventHealth’s faith-based mission of “Extending the Healing Ministry of Christ”.
