This neurology course will assist the healthcare provider in their understanding and proficiency in:

A&P and Assessment (1.5 CEU)

  1. Naming the primary structures of the central nervous system and describing their functions, including impulse conduction and neurotransmitters.
  2. Describing the major functions of the neurological system's macrostructures and their locations in the body.
  3. Explaining the intracranial dynamics of the neurological system including the Monroe-Kellie hypothesis and intracranial pressure.
  4. Identifying types and causes of herniation syndromes.
  5. Summarizing the steps involved in basic and complex neurological assessment and identifying common diagnostic tests used for neurological assessment and diagnosis including use, data generated, and related nursing protocols.

Strokes (1.5 CEU)

  1. Differentiating between epidural and subdural hematomas.
  2. Describing the causes, diagnosis, treatment, and nursing care for each type of hematoma.
  3. Classifying intracranial, intraventricular, and subarachnoid hemorrhage, and identifying the causes, diagnosis, treatment, and nursing care for each type of stroke.
  4. Identifying arteriovenous malformation and describing the causes, treatment, and nursing care.
  5. Identifying ischemic stroke and describing the causes, treatment, and nursing care.

Brain and Spinal Cord Injuries (1.5 CEU)

  1. Defining traumatic brain injury and identifying the various types of injury.
  2. Describing the treatment guidelines for traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), including special nursing care considerations.
  3. Naming the steps critical to “initial care” for traumatic brain injury victims.
  4. Identifying the mechanisms and types of spinal cord injuries and differentiating between complete and incomplete functional loss.
  5. Describing treatment and patient care considerations for patients with spinal cord injuries.

  1. Understanding seizures and treatment modalities.
  2. Recognizing CNS infections, causes, and treatments.
