This hematology course will assist the healthcare provider in their understanding and proficiency in:

A&P and RBCs (1 CEU)

  1. Naming the functions of the blood and identifying the cellular components of the hematologic system and their functions, including stem cells, red blood cells, platelets, coagulation factors, plasma, and immunoglobulins.
  2. Describing the anatomical structures of the hematologic system and their functions, including the bone marrow, liver, and spleen.
  3. Listing the factors included in the clinical and laboratory assessment of the patient with hematologic disorders and their physical findings.
  4. Describing the physiology of red blood cells and explaining the disorders of RBCs.
  5. Identifying the factors included in the clinical assessment with the patient who has anemia and explaining red blood cells indices found in anemic patients; and describing the pathophysiology, laboratory findings, and patient management of iron-deficiency anemia.
  6. Describing the pathophysiology, laboratory findings, and patient management of sickle cell anemia.

White Blood Cells (1.5 CEU)

  1. Identifying the different types of white blood cells (WBCs) and the role they play in the body's immune system.
  2. Differentiating between humoral and cell-mediated immunity.
  3. Describing the physical findings and listing the factors included in the clinical assessment of the patient with an immune reaction.
  4. Identifying the etiology, pathophysiology, and care issues with neutropenia and leukocytosis.

Maintaining Hemostasis & Immune Function (1.5 CEU)

  1. Describing different components of the immune system and the physical findings and listing the factors included in the clinical assessment of the patient with an immune reaction.
  2. Describing the clinical presentation, laboratory findings, and patient management issues in the patient with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), thrombocytopenia, and heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT).
  3. Explaining the coagulation mechanism and the fibrinolytic process and the role it plays in maintaining hemostasis.
  4. Describing the factors included in the clinical and laboratory assessment of the patient with hematologic disorders, thrombocytopenia, and their physical findings.
  5. Explaining the pathophysiologic processes resulting in disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and the clinical presentation, laboratory findings, and patient management issues in the patient with DIC.
  6. Listing the laboratory results in a complete electrolyte and metabolic panel and explain their clinical significance.
