Sabrina Bayona, RN, BSN

Sabrina Bayona is a graduate student working on her doctorate in Nurse Anesthesia Practice at AdventHealth University. Before entering the program, she had earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology and Molecular Biology at the University of Central Florida, worked in outpatient dental surgery centers as a dental assistant, and volunteered with the Red Cross as a second responder in the Disaster Action Team. Sabrina earned her Associate Degree in Nursing from Seminole State College in 2019 while working as a Nurse Technician at AdventHealth Hospital. Once she graduated, she began working bedside in the Vascular Progressive Care Unit (VPCU) for a little over a year while achieving her Bachelor of Nursing from the University of Central Florida. Sabrina then spent the next two years as a bedside and charge nurse in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU). In her leadership role, she coordinated and educated staff, facilitated communication with leadership and the interdisciplinary team, and ensured the unit complied with safety standards for patient care.

Claire Edwards, RN, BSN

Claire Edwards is currently in the Doctorate of Nurse Anesthesia Program at AdventHealth University. She graduated from Keiser University with her BS in Nursing and priorly graduated from the University of Central Florida with a bachelor’s in Sports and Exercise Science. She was placed on the Dean’s list and graduated with honors at the University of Central Florida. She was a registered nurse for two years at AdventHealth Hospital in Celebration and Palm Coast, Florida. Claire Edwards worked on a medical/surgical ICU floor during COVID-19. She was part of the Governance Professional Counsel on her unit of 100 beds, which included revising protocols, advocating for nurses, and solving patient safety concerns.

Carlos Fernandez, RN, BSN

Carlos Fernandez currently is a student of the Doctorate of Anesthesia Practice program at AdventHealth University in Orlando, FL. He previously obtained his Associate of science degree at Miami-Dade Community College in 2013 and then matriculated on to graduate with his Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in 2016 from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in Tallahassee, FL. After graduation Carlos moved to Orlando where he worked at Doctor P. Phillips hospital starting on the Medical-Surgical unit and working his way up to the Intensive Care unit (ICU). Carlos started in the Intensive Care Unit in 2019 before the beginning of the pandemic. During his time in the ICU Carlos quickly grew and showed himself as a leader on the unit, he became Charge Nurse, achieved his CCRN in 2020, and became one of the night shift Rapid Response Nurses for the hospital. In 2022 Carlos Fernandez ventured out and started travel nursing in the ICU, working in several cities throughout the United States.

Angelica Vander zalm, RN, MSN

Angelica Vander zalm is a graduate student in the Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice program at AdventHealth University. Angelica graduated from the University of Louisville with a BSN and MSN in nursing, with an emphasis in research and evidence-based practice. Angelica has six-months experience in OCD/autism research at the University of Utah under the team of Mario Capecchi. Angelica served as the chairwoman of environmental chemistry in the American Chemical Society in her undergraduate education. Prior to acceptance to the DNAP program, Angelica worked as a registered nurse at an advanced cardiac surgical ICU, specializing in mechanical circulatory support devices and heart failure. Currently serving as class president of AHU DNAP class of 2026.

Patrick Willingham, RN, BSN

Patrick Willingham is a graduate student in the Doctorate of Nurse Anesthesia Program at AdventHealth University. Patrick Willingham graduated from Pensacola Christian College with a BS in Nursing, researching and presenting a poster project on elderly depression and exercise with his classmates. Prior to acceptance to the DNAP program, Patrick Willingham worked as a registered nurse for four years, the last three of which were in the ICU during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to serving on unit-based counsels, he played a vital role in the Professional Governance Counsel at a 250-bed facility. In this position, he was the co-creator of medication safety posters, standardization of hand-off tools, clinical feedback for electronic charting system updates, and tiered safety huddles as part of the transition of that facility to a high-reliability organization.
