Pediatric laryngospasm is recognized as one of the most serious perioperative events, increasing morbidity and mortality. Despite its significance, it is often mismanaged due to a lack of standardized knowledge and preparedness across institutions. A key weakness within the team is the limited understanding of responsibilities and lack of awareness, which hinders the effective prevention, identification, and management of laryngospasm. The anesthesia provider alone cannot manage all interventions during such crises, highlighting the need for the entire perioperative team to be well-prepared. This course provides comprehensive education on the prevention, identification, and management of pediatric laryngospasm through the integration of theory and clinical practice to enhance team dynamics, increase safety, and elevate patient care standards through evidence-based strategies.

Equipping healthcare providers with the necessary skills and knowledge aids in improving team competency, response times, and patient outcomes, ultimately reducing the risks and complications associated with pediatric laryngospasm.

Upon successful completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

  1. Recognize the anatomy and physiology of laryngospasm, including its risk factors and triggers, statistical significance, and special populations.
  2. Describe various treatment options and modalities to manage patient care effectively.
  3. Evaluate the effectiveness of treatment options, including pharmacological interventions, to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
  4. Recognize the cognitive aid that improves recognition of signs, symptoms, and differential diagnoses and treatment modalities.
  5. Differentiate staff competency levels through continuous education on diagnosis and treatment strategies.

Davide Barrile, BSN, RN

Davide Barrile was born and raised in Italy. After graduating high school, he joined the Italian Army as a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO). During his three years at the NCO academy, he completed his Bachelor of Science in Management and eventually became part of the Italian Army Special Operations. Davide completed the one-year program at the JFK Special Warfare Center and School in Fort Bragg, NC, and graduated with honors as a Special Operations Combat Medic (SOCOM). As a combat medic, he deployed in different areas, including Afghanistan and Somalia. He was later appointed as a combat medic instructor and survival medicine instructor and served as a medic during the survival training for the European Space Agency (ESA) class of 2009 astronauts. Davide left the Italian Army as a Master Sergeant and moved to the United States. He joined the US Navy Reserve as a Corpsman to continue fulfilling his passion for the military and medicine. He decided to pursue a career in anesthesia and completed his Bachelor of Science in Nursing at ECPI University in Lake Mary, FL, where he graduated summa cum laude. Davide began working at the University of Florida Shands Emergency Department (ED) and was nominated ED Nurse of the Year within the first year of his experience. He also served there during the first wave of COVID-19. After deciding to move back to Orlando, Davide accepted a position in the Cardiovascular ICU at AdventHealth. Over the next 3 years, he received training in all cardiac devices and took care of the most critical COVID-19 patients who required Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) support and eventually became an advanced preceptor.

Davide is currently enrolled in the Doctorate of Nurse Anesthesia Practice (DNAP) program at AdventHealth University (AHU) to achieve his goal of a career in anesthesia. Additionally, he serves as a reservist with the Air Force, holding the rank of Lieutenant in the Critical Care Air Transportation Team (CCATT).

Brenda Garcia, BSN, RN

Brenda is a distinguished graduate student at AdventHealth University (AHU), where she is pursuing her Doctorate of Nurse Anesthesia Practice (DNAP). Born in Argentina, Brenda faced the challenging yet resilience-building experience of adapting to a new country, learning a new culture and language. Brenda holds a BSN from Southern Adventist University (SAU) and over five years of dedicated experience in critical care at AdventHealth (AH). Her time at AH is marked by her exceptional work in the COVID ICU, where she managed highly critically ill patients during the pandemic. Her time in the COVID ICU highlighted her resilience, adaptability, and advanced clinical skills, making her a vital asset to the team. Her role on the hospital's Code Blue Team showcased her ability to perform under intense pressure and contribute to life-saving efforts. In addition, Brenda dedicated two years to the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) at AH Orlando, where she played a crucial role in the recovery of patients following open-heart surgeries and the management of individuals on mechanical circulatory support devices. Her work in the CVICU required a deep understanding of complex cardiovascular conditions and advanced patient care techniques, underscoring her expertise in this specialized field. Beyond her clinical responsibilities, Brenda has made significant contributions as a preceptor and educator for new hires in her unit. Brenda's dedication to professional growth is evident in her eagerness to learn from esteemed colleagues and professors, consistently striving to elevate her practice. Her remarkable achievements and commitment to nursing excellence make her a standout professional in the field. Her journey from SAU to her current pursuit of a DNAP degree at AHU, combined with her unique perspective as an immigrant, is a testament to her unwavering dedication to advancing healthcare and improving patient outcomes.

Maher Khalaf, BSN, RN

Maher is a Student Registered Nurse Anesthetist enrolled in the Doctorate of Nurse Anesthesia Program at AdventHealth University. Maher Khalaf graduated from Valencia College with an Associate in Science (A.S.) degree in nursing. He started his nursing career at AdventHealth Orlando working in the Cardiovascular Progressive Care Unit (CVPCU). While working in CVPCU, he acquired his Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from the University of Central Florida. He ultimately transferred to the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit at AdventHealth Orlando where he gained a valuable skill set and work experience prior to embarking on his journey to becoming a future Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.

Personnel working in the operating room and recovery area: anesthesia providers, circulators, first-assists, registered nurses, anesthesia technicians, nursing and medical students.

Our courses are periodically tested on a variety of mobile phones and tablets running iOS and Android. While there are far too many different devices out there for us to test on, we strive to test on a representative sample of mobile devices running the latest version of both operating systems.

Internet Connection

For stable video playback in our courses, we recommend your internet connection provide bandwidth of 5 Mbps or faster. The videos in our courses are designed for HD (high definition) playback, but if your internet connection is slow, video resolution may automatically be reduced to a lower resolution in order to continue uninterrupted streaming of the video. Inadequate internet connection speeds may also result in pausing of video playback.

Hardware

The videos in our courses do have sound, so your device will need to support sound with speakers or headphones. Please note that due to the vast number of different hardware configurations available in desktop, laptop, tablet and mobile phone devices, we are unable to provide specifications for minimum hardware requirements.
