Optimizing Difficult Airway Management

Price: $25.00
Nursing CE: 1.50
This course is accessible until 7/1/2028

A difficult airway (DA) involves challenges or failures in facemask ventilation, laryngoscopy, supraglottic airway ventilation, tracheal intubation, extubation, or invasive airway management by anesthesia providers. Limited exposure to this clinical scenario and inadequate training of the perioperative staff can result in severe complications, including anoxic brain injury, prolonged hospital stays, and increased mortality during anesthesia. Respiratory events are the leading cause of anesthesia-related closed claims, with a significant proportion resulting in brain damage or death. Research indicates that 81% of these incidents are preventable, and 85% lead to severe outcomes, emphasizing the need for improved training and standardized protocols. Effective airway management requires clinicians to assess a DA and prioritize first-attempt success.

In this course, we will review the characteristics that indicate the potential for a difficult airway, assess the tools and techniques available for identifying and managing a difficult airway, and discuss the roles of the perioperative team members during difficult airway emergencies. Additionally, we will explore the clinical correlations, complications, and barriers to using these tools, review their benefits in improving patient safety and airway management techniques, and examine their role in reducing the incidence of adverse outcomes. By the end of this course, healthcare providers will implement evidence-based practices and make informed decisions that lead to optimal airway management and improved patient outcomes. This course will engage the learner to explore this topic and how it impacts healthcare professionals and the care they provide to patients.

Nathalia Pacini, BSN, RN, CCRN, BCEM

Nathalia is a Doctorate of Nurse Anesthesia Program graduate student at AdventHealth Univeristy. Nathalia graduated from the University of Central Florida in 2019 prior to acceptance to the DNAP program. Nathalia worked at Advent Health Orlando prior to commencing graduate studies. Nathalia worked in two high-acuity settings: the intensive care unit and the emergency department. Each unit nurtured unique skills. The emergency department taught Nathalia how to quickly make critical decisions with little background information on the patients. The intensive care unit taught Nathalia how to polish her critical care knowledge from the emergency department as she learned more about maintaining life support machines and medications. Nathalia is excited to transition to her new role as a student registered nurse anesthetist and continue her academia as a lifelong learner.

Browsers and operating systems are constantly being updated with improvements, new features and security patches. At echelon, we strive to keep up with these changes and, while our courses may work with older browsers and operating systems, we cannot guarantee compatibility with older systems.

Browser

We officially support the latest version of these browsers: Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox. We strongly encourage you to keep your operating system and browser as up to date as possible.

Chrome/Safari/Edge/Firefox

Operating System

We periodically test our courses in supported browsers on computers running Windows and MacOS. Please be aware that both Microsoft and Apple routinely end their support of older operating systems (for example, Windows XP and Vista, MacOS El Capitan, Yosemite, etc) and we do not test our courses on these unsupported operating systems.

Mobile Devices

Our courses are periodically tested on a variety of mobile phones and tablets running iOS and Android. While there are far too many different devices out there for us to test on, we strive to test on a representative sample of mobile devices running the latest version of both operating systems.

Internet Connection

For stable video playback in our courses, we recommend your internet connection provide bandwidth of 5 Mbps or faster. The videos in our courses are designed for HD (high definition) playback, but if your internet connection is slow, video resolution may automatically be reduced to a lower resolution in order to continue uninterrupted streaming of the video. Inadequate internet connection speeds may also result in pausing of video playback.

Hardware

The videos in our courses do have sound, so your device will need to support sound with speakers or headphones. Please note that due to the vast number of different hardware configurations available in desktop, laptop, tablet and mobile phone devices, we are unable to provide specifications for minimum hardware requirements.
