RSV: Respiratory Syncytial Virus in Children

This course focuses on the care of the pediatric patient with Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). It will review the signs and symptoms associated with RSV infection and discuss the management of those symptoms in both the outpatient and inpatient settings. This course will discuss methods of preventing the spread of RSV from one person to another, including the use of contact precautions and patient/family education. Finally, it will review current research and future trends in the management of RSV in children.

Upon successful completion of the course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Define bronchiolitis and its various causes in children.
  2. Recognize different signs and symptoms of upper and lower respiratory tract involvement of RSV.
  3. Identify populations at high risk for development of complications from RSV.
  4. Describe clinical manifestations of RSV requiring inpatient management.
  5. List lab tests available to diagnose RSV.
  6. Describe proper use of contact precautions in preventing nosocomial spread of RSV.
  7. List current medications used specifically for RSV management, including the method and schedule of administration, and potential side effects for both patients and healthcare providers.
  8. Describe which interventions to use with RSV and when they are used.

Qualified Planners/Faculty

Ashley Gauthier, MSN, RN

Professor Gauthier has been with AdventHealth University since 2015. Prior to coming AHU, she worked at Florida Hospital in the pediatric medical-surgical setting, as well as the neonatal intensive care unit. She received her BSN and MSN from the University of Central Florida. Professor Gauthier currently teaches Nursing Care of the Child and Family, Principles of Pathophysiology, and is clinical faculty in Health Promotion and Wellness.

Sydney Moran, PhD, RN, CPN

Dr. Sydney Moran is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Nursing at AdventHealth University. She teaches in Health Assessment, Health Promotion, and Pediatrics. She has been a Registered Nurse for 25 years. She received her ASN from Valencia Community College; BSN from Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences; MSN from University of Central Florida; PhD from Barry University. Dr. Moran specialized in Pediatric Medical-Surgical nursing. She is a Certified Pediatric Nurse and member of the Society of Pediatric Nurses. Currently she serves as the secretary for AHU's Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society, Chi Upsilon. Her research areas of interest are videoconferencing technologies, student perspectives, and workplace environment.

Revisioning Author: M. Julie Talmadge, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, APPD

Dr. Talmadge is a family nurse practitioner with over 18 years of experience as a nurse practitioner. Her most recent clinical experience was in acute care working with a surgical residency program in Orlando, Florida. In 2013 she was awarded her Doctorate of Nursing Practice from the University of Florida in Gainesville. She currently is the Accredited Provider Program Director with echelon, Continuing Education and Professional Development, a Division of AdventHealth University. Dr. Talmadge is a member of the Central Florida Advanced Nursing Practice Council. She served on the Florida Board of Nursing, as appointed by the Governor (term 2018 - 2021). She has been adjunct faculty at the University of Central Florida and has precepted graduate nurse practitioner students.
