Care for the Hispanic Patient: A Cross-Cultural Approach

This course for the healthcare professional provides information on how to manage Latino patients safely and with dignity, improve their health and wellness outcomes, and ultimately help them assimilate into the U.S. healthcare system. This course outlines and defines specific healthcare priorities and deficiencies of first-generation Latin American immigrants through the recognition of signs of illiteracy and linguistic challenges. Also covered is human trafficking and ways to implement strategies to help protect patients. This is the first in a course series on Hispanic patient care.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Recognize the specific healthcare priorities and deficiencies of first-generation Latin American immigrants and act on this knowledge.
  2. Deliver/Describe patient care in a culturally sensitive manner to encourage safe medical treatment and proper follow-up care.
  3. Recognize the signs of illiteracy and linguistic challenges among patients and communicate accordingly.
  4. Recognize victims of abuse and implement strategies to help protect patients.
  5. Implement/Discuss strategies to obtain information and comprehensive assessments from Latino individuals in a culturally sensitive manner, especially those lacking in preventive care and engaging in alternative medical practices.
  6. Utilize/Discuss strategies to help Latino patients assimilate into the U.S. healthcare system.
  7. Improve the health and wellness outcomes of Hispanic patients.

Qualified Planners/Faculty

Lori Madden, Ph.D, M.A., B.A.

is a professor of foreign languages in Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin American Literature. She is on faculty at St. Petersburg College. Dr. Madden has resided in Spain, Brazil, and Costa Rica. She has taught for many years educating adults in Spanish and Portuguese languages and Hispanic culture, in both academic and professional environments. She is owner of SLS Publications, dedicated to educating businesses about Hispanic behavior in the U.S. and abroad and to providing Spanish Language training for the professions.

Revisioning Author: Marlene Watson, EdD, JD, MSN, RN

Dr. Marlene Watson has been a nursing faculty at AdventHealth University since 2005. In 1993, Dr. Watson earned her Diploma Nursing Degree at George Brown College in Toronto, Canada. She continued her education at the University of Central Florida where she earned her BSN in 1999 and MSN in 2003.  In 2014, Dr. Watson received her Doctor of Education from Nova Southeastern University and a Juris Doctorate from Barry University in 2018.

After receiving her law degree, she became an adjunct professor providing online instruction to students in their second and third year. Currently, she serves as a content reviewer for echelon®, and has been a clinical adjunct faculty for the University of Central Florida.

Dr. Watson is the founder and President of Youth United for Christ, a local 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit organization, whose mission is to mentor both children and youth. She has organized and participated in several mission trips to Haiti, where she and her team provided health related screenings and education. Additionally, she has coordinated many local community outreach events, serving displaced families in the community.
