Many of us have heard the term "human trafficking". Many think of human trafficking as sex trafficking or prostitution. Some of us may think that human trafficking exists outside of the United States and mostly in third world countries. So, what is human trafficking? Who are the victims? Who are the traffickers? Why are people trafficked? What health-related issues do victims of human trafficking present with? Where and how do victims get healthcare? This course is designed to bring about awareness, in identifying and caring for the victims of human trafficking, for all members of the healthcare team.

Upon successful completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Define human trafficking and the forms of human trafficking.
  2. List vulnerabilities that place individuals at increased risk of becoming a victim of human trafficking.
  3. Identify general indicators that a person may be a victim of human trafficking.
  4. Apply screening questions that can be utilized to identify victims of human trafficking.
  5. Describe health consequesnces of human trafficking.
  6. Discuss social service programs available to human trafficking victims.
  7. Understand hotline services available for reporting human trafficking.
  8. Recognize who the trafficker is and why they traffick.
  9. Restate the role of the healthcare worker in caring for human trafficking victims.

Qualified Planners/Faculty

M. Julie Talmadge, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, APPD

Dr. Talmadge is a family nurse practitioner with over 18 years of experience as a nurse practitioner. Her most recent clinical experience was in acute care working with a surgical residency program in Orlando, Florida. In 2013 she was awarded her Doctorate of Nursing Practice from the University of Florida in Gainesville. She currently is the Accredited Provider Program Director with echelon, Continuing Education and Professional Development, a Division of AdventHealth University. Dr. Talmadge is a member of the Central Florida Advanced Nursing Practice Council. She served on the Florida Board of Nursing, as appointed by the Governor (term 2018 - 2021). She has been adjunct faculty at the University of Central Florida and has precepted graduate nurse practitioner students.
