The Cardiovascular System Series includes A&P and Hemodynamics, Patient Assessment and Diagnostic Tests, Acute Coronary Syndrome and Heart Failure, Heart Disease and Injury, and Case Studies and Medications. These 5 courses were grouped in a module focusing on the understanding of the structure and function of the cardiovascular system, and enhancement of the assessment and care skills needed for working with patients with cardiac disorders. Continuing education credit is immediately available after entire course completion of all posttests and survey.

NOTE: This activity may be available in multiple formats or from different sponsors;  individuals may not repeat and report a self-learning activity for credit twice in the same biennium.

Learning Outcomes:

A&P and Hemodynamics (1.50 CNE)

  1. Identify the role of circulating blood in meeting cellular needs and maintaining homeostasis.
  2. Describe the normal structure and function of the cardiovascular system.
  3. Analyze the relationship between autonomic nervous system response and cardiovascular function.
  4. List the factors that affect cardiac output and explain its impact on body perfusion.
  5. Describe the impact of medications on the autonomic nervous system

Patient Assessment & Diagnostic Tests (1.00 CNE)

  1. Recognize auscultation findings of normal and abnormal heart sounds.
  2. Assess findings of valvular disease and ventricular septal defects.
  3. Assess findings of fluid changes within the heart.
  4. Complete a pertinent cardiovascular patient history.
  5. Describe blood tests that are essential to the cardiovascular assessment.
  6. Compare the noninvasive tests used to evaluate for cardiovascular dysfunction.
  7. Discuss invasive cardiovascular tests and interventions.

Acute Coronary Syndrome and Heart Failure (1.00 CNE)

  1. Identify cardiovascular risk factors and metabolic syndrome.
  2. Identify signs and symptoms of acute coronary syndrome.
  3. Identify diagnostic criteria for unstable angina, STEMI (ST-elevation myocardial infarction), and NSTEMI (Non ST-elevation myocardial infarction).
  4. Discuss ECG findings while comparing and contrasting ST segment differences in unstable angina, STEMI, and NSTEMI.
  5. Discuss the evidence-based practice medical/nursing management for care of the acute coronary syndrome patient.
  6. Discuss the potential complications of acute myocardial infarction.
  7. Differentiate left and right ventricular failure, as well as medical management of each.
  8. Discuss hemodynamic principles in the following patient populations: cardiogenic shock secondary to left ventricular failure, right ventricular infarction, papillary muscle rupture, acute ventricular septal defect, pulmonary emboli, and hypovolemic shock.

Heart Disease and Injury (1.00 CNE)

  1. Identify the signs and symptoms of carotid artery disease and peripheral artery disease and treatment options for each.
  2. Identify coronary revascularization procedures, including less invasive approaches.
  3. Discuss risk factors for aneurysm formation, differentiate between the types of aneurysms and locations, and the treatment options available.
  4. Identify the various cardiac structures disorders and complications that may occur.
  5. Explain the use of a temporary pacemaker and the indications for an implantable cardioverter defibrillator.

Case Studies and Medications (1.00 CNE)

  1. Identify the various cardiovascular medications, including their indications, contraindications, dosages, and adverse effects.
  2. Describe procedures and diagnostic tests used in the cardiovascular arena.
  3. Identify the signs and symptoms associated with cardiovascular disease.
  4. Describe common treatments and possible complications associated with cardiovascular care, including post-op complications.
  5. Identify risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease.

Qualified Planners/Faculty

Revisioning Author: Leesuk Ferencsik, PhD, RN

is registered nurse (RN), an assistant professor at AdventHealth University (AHU), Orlando, Florida. Leesuk earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the Korea Open University, South Korea, Master’s degree in Nursing Education from the University of Phoenix, and nursing PhD from Barry University, College of Nursing and Health Sciences, Miami, Florida.

She has been a RN since 1989 and worked in both South Korea and the United States on long-term care facility, health clinic, and all levels of care in various acute care hospitals. Before she became a nursing faculty at AHU, she worked as a clinical nurse educator for a multisystem ICU, Surgical PCU, and Transplant Unit. Her roles of the nurse educator and mentor continued when she became a nursing faculty member at AHU. She had edited and published several research articles while working at AHU. Her teaching experience here at AHU includes both campus teaching for Genetic BSN (GBSN) and Distance education (RN-BSN).

Revisioning Author: Angelina Graham, MSN, RN

Angelina Graham has been employed with Florida Hospital since 2005. Her background is Cardiology Nursing and working on Progressive Care Units (PCU). She received her BSN from Bethune Cookman University (formerly Bethune Cookman-College) and her MSN from the University of Central Florida. She has been with the nursing faculty at AdventHealth University since 2011.

Deborah Torres-Logan, DNP, APRN, ANP-BC

Ms. Deborah Torres-Logan is an adult nurse practitioner and works in the office setting seeing vascular patients. She graduated from the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL with her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. She graduated from the University of South Florida in Tampa, FL with her Master of Science in Nursing degree and Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. She graduated from Florida Hospital College of Health Science in Orlando, FL with her Associate of Science in Nursing degree. She is a former Instructor of  Nursing at Adventist Health University.  She is a member of the American Association of Nurse practitioners and the International Nursing Honor Society, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI). She was the president of the Nursing Honor Society at Advent Health University in 2014-2015.  During her presidency, the nursing honor society applied to become a chapter of STTI and was approved.  She is a peer-reviewer for the Journal of American Association of Nurse Practitioners. She has been on clinical mission trips to Dominican Republic and Haiti.
