Point-of-Care Ultrasound Gastric Assessment

Price: $25.00
Nursing CE: 1.50   Imaging CE: 1.75
This course is accessible until 7/31/2025

Point-of-Care-Ultrasound (POCUS) gastric assessment is the gold standard for determining fasting status to determine gastric volume versus subjective NPO measures. Proficiency in POCUS gastric assessment enables the healthcare provider to perform a POCUS gastric assessment at the bedside where current anesthesia NPO protocols may not accurately define the risk of aspiration.

The modules in this course will provide the foundation for healthcare providers on how to perform a POCUS gastric assessment when assessing preoperative aspiration risks. This course will also highlight the high-risk populations and circumstances that typically underestimate current NPO guidelines. In addition, review of the benefits of an absolute answer through the utilization of a POCUS gastric assessment and how to apply specific bedside diagnoses to critical populations resulting in improved anesthesia plans and decreased patient aspiration. Adding POCUS gastric assessment to the anesthesia protocol will improve the safe patient environment and optimize patient outcomes.

Upon successful completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Discuss the benefits of POCUS gastric assessment within the preoperative period.
  2. Describe the sequential process of performing a POCUS gastric assessment.
  3. Interpret results of a POCUS gastric assessment and apply findings to a patient scenario.
  4. Integrate acquired knowledge to discuss the evaluation of a specialty population that will benefit from POCUS gastric assessment.
