This course on ventilators and chest tubes includes a discussion of modes of ventilation, ventilator-associated pneumonia, suction/secretion management, and the ventilator's effect on specific body systems. Chest tubes and the varieties of chest drainage systems utilized to correct pulmonary anomalies (e.g. air and/or fluid in the pleural space) are also discussed.

This pulmonary course on ventilation modes and chest tubes will assist the healthcare provider in their understanding and proficiency in:

  1. The three interventions that assist in the prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia.
  2. Differentiating between high-pressure and low-pressure alarms as well as circumstances when they occur.
  3. Describing how positive pressure ventilation can affect several body systems functions.
  4. Describing appropriate suctioning techniques and supplies necessary for the process.
  5. Describing indications for chest tube placement and chest drainage systems utilized.
  6. Explaining the appropriate maintenance techniques and troubleshooting activities for chest tubes and the two indications for chest tube clamping and the guidelines utilized.

Qualified Planners/Faculty

Clarissa Welbaum, MSN, RN, CCNS, CCTN

Clarissa Welbaum, MSN, RN, CCNS, CCTN graduated from Samford University School of Nursing in Birmingham, Alabama in 1997 with a BSN degree. She then worked in the Coronary Care Unit at UAB Hospital from 1997-2003. She received her MSN with Clinical Nurse Specialist Degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing in 2003. After graduation, Mrs. Welbaum assumed the position as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in the Medical/Surgical Service line.  In 2005 she received her certification as a Clinical Nurse Specialist for the Adult and Critical Care population through AACN.  Currently Mrs. Welbaum is the Clinical Nurse Specialist for the Abdominal Surgery and Abdominal Transplant Serviceline.

Lynette Woide received her diploma of nursing from Fairview General Hospital School of Nursing.  She furthered her studies and obtained her BSN and MSN from the University of Phoenix.  Her professional career has focused on oncology.
