This neurological course for nurses presents disease states of the patient with a head injury or spinal cord injury. Also presented are surgical treatments that are often used to treat specific injuries and the expected outcomes of these procedures as well as nursing treatment utilized in caring for patients who have these injuries.

This neurology course on brain and spinal cord injuries will assist the healthcare provider in their understanding and proficiency in:

  1. Defining traumatic brain injury and identifying the various types of injury.
  2. Describing the treatment guidelines for traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), including special nursing care considerations.
  3. Naming the steps critical to “initial care” for traumatic brain injury victims.
  4. Identifying the mechanisms and types of spinal cord injuries and differentiating between complete and incomplete functional loss.
  5. Describing treatment and patient care considerations for patients with spinal cord injuries.

Revisioning Author: Patricia Clayton-LeVasseur, PhD, RN, CNRN

Dr. Patricia Clayton-LeVasseur has been in nursing practice for over 20 years. She has an extensive background in critical care, neuroscience, nursing administration, and education. She received her Philosophy in Nursing degree from Barry University. Currently, she is an Associate Professor at AdventHealth University. Dr. Clayton-LeVasseur is a member of the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses and the National League for Nursing. She has published articles in peer-reviewed nursing journals and presented at several international nursing conferences.

Misti Tuppeny, MSN, CNS, CCRN, CNRN, CCNS

Misti Tuppeny, MSN, CNS, CCRN, CNRN, CCNS, graduated from the University of Central Florida with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. She then received her Master of Science degree in nursing from the University of Phoenix and her post Master's certificate as a clinical nurse specialist from the University of Central Florida. She has achieved and maintains national certifications for Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) as well as Certified Neuroscience Registered Nurse (CNRN). She is the Clinical Nurse Specialist for the Neuro Critical Care, Neuroscience and the Stroke Behavioral Health units at Florida Hospital in Orlando. She oversees neuroscience education development and research, assists with patient care planning for complex care issues, and assess and evaluates patient care systems issues that affect patient care outcomes.

Lynette Woide received her diploma of nursing from Fairview General Hospital School of Nursing.  She furthered her studies and obtained her BSN and MSN from the University of Phoenix.  Her professional career has focused on oncology.
