Upon successful completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

1. Define the terms abuse, dependence, impairment, substance use disorder, and addiction.
2. Identify the prevalence of substance use disorder among nurses.
3. Distinguish the risk factors, signs, and symptoms of impairment.
4. Discuss the legal obligation to report on impairment and analyze the necessary steps to complete a report.
5. Evaluate the available treatment programs for nurses.
6. Describe a safe, transparent, and nonjudgmental workplace.
