Cultural competence has become a major focus for healthcare professionals and healthcare facilities alike. This course discusses communication barriers as well as healthcare disparities that may occur in healthcare interactions with various racial and ethnic populations.  This course is designed to broaden healthcare professionals’ knowledge and skillsets utilized in culturally sensitive healthcare delivery.

  1. Discuss values and preferences of individuals from various ethnic groups and cultures.
  2. Describe how cultural, language, and religious diversity impact the access to and the delivery of healthcare.
  3. Identify Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) standards and their purpose.
  4. Distinguish various abilities on cultural competence continuum scale.
  5. Review constructs of several cultural competence models and theories.
  6. Compare the similarities of various cultural competency assessment models for assessing patients from diverse cultures.
  7. Utilize key components of various cultural competency assessment models to provide comprehensive and culturally competent care.
  8. Discuss the nine critical domains used for measuring cultural competence, as defined by HRSA's Cultural Competence Committee.

Revisioning Author: Glenice DeBique, Ph.D.

Dr. Glenice DeBique is a professor in the Health and Biomedical Sciences Department at AdventHealth University. Her responsibilities include teaching assignments at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the areas of Introduction to Sociology; Multicultural Applications for the Health Sciences; and Cultural and Ethical Considerations for Health Sciences.  Dr. DeBique holds credentials in Teacher Education, BSc in Education and MSc in Education in Education, and in 1997, Dr. DeBique received her Ph. D. (Education) from Washington State University. She continues to serve the wider community along with her students in service-learning experiences through the IMPACT- Innovative Ministries with Parents, Administrators, Children and Teachers in the Orlando area, in addition to work done with the Orlando Junior Achievement program. Dr. DeBique has had experience in studies abroad program, taking students to West Africa. Dr. DeBique received the President’s Award (WSU) in leadership and service for community work in the Pacific Northwest as well as the Teaching Excellence Award while at WSU. Dr. DeBique is ranked among Who is Who Among America’s Teachers as well as a past member of Phi Delta Kappa Educational organization. Dr. DeBique has been nominated for the Campus Compact: Campus Community Partnership Award for Service Learning, Thomas Ehrlich Civically Engaged Faculty Award (2014 and 16). She also received the Spirituality Award from ADU (2009). Dr. DeBique’s research interests include community engagement initiatives, Teaching and Learning educational practice and theory as well as issues in diversity and cultural constructs.

P. Gage Gwyn, Ph.D., APRN-BC, CNS, OCN, FCN

Priscilla "Gage" Gwyn is an adult oncology nurse practitioner at the Ambulatory Infusion Center at AdventHealth in Greater Orlando (formerly Florida Hospital).  Dr. Gwyn received her Bachelor of Science in nursing from the SUNY Brockport College of Nursing in New York and her Master of Science in nursing with Adult Nurse Practitioner and Clinical Nurse Specialist certificates from Duke University College of Nursing in Durham, North Carolina.  She then received her PhD in Nursing from the Barry University, Division of Nursing, in Miami Shores, Florida.  She has lectured on the care of patients with hematologic malignancies and has initiated, coordinated, and facilitated monthly support groups at several practice locations in Florida.  She is nationally published and is a current member of the Oncology Nursing Society, Society of NeuroOncology, and Greater Orlando Hematology Oncology Physician Extenders.

Mark Payne, DHSc, PA-C, DFAAPA

Dr. Payne earned his degree in Physician Assistant from Kettering College in Dayton Ohio.  He went on to earn a Master of Arts degree in Emergency and Disaster Management from American Military University as well as a Master of Science and Doctor of Health Science degree in Advanced Physician Assistant Studies from A.T. Still University. 

Dr. Payne has been a clinically practicing Physician Assistant for over 25 years, primarily in emergency medicine.  He has also spent time, throughout his career, working in medically underserved clinics in various parts of New York and Florida.  He is currently the founding Chair and Program Director for the Physician Assistant Program at AdventHealth University in Orlando Florida where he holds the rank of Assistant Professor.

He has served as the Chairman of Impaired Practitioners for the State of New York Board of Medicine as well as serving on various professional committees through organizations he is a member of.  He currently serves as a board member for PAs for Tomorrow and on the Faculty Relations Committee for the Florida Academy of Physician Assistants.

Revisioning Author: Lynette Woide, MSN, RN

Lynette Woide received her diploma of nursing from Fairview General Hospital School of Nursing.  She furthered her studies and obtained her BSN and MSN from the University of Phoenix.  Her professional career has focused on oncology. Lynette lives in Central Florida and now focuses her time working for echelon.
