Pediatric Cardiac Sonography Program

This program is divided into 3 sections and 12 modules: Normal Pediatric Anatomy and Protocol, Abnormalities, and Basic Fetal Imaging providing an overview of heart anatomy including heart development, orientation, planes, and segments. Imaging protocol specific to the pediatric patient will be demonstrated, and anatomy unique to pediatric cardiac imaging will be explored, including congenital variants. A number of cardiac heart defects will be described, and interventional procedures and surgical repairs will be explained. An introduction to imaging the fetal heart will be provided to include basic biometry and fetal anatomy and survey.

This program has been submitted to SDMS for 10 continuing education credits.

  1. List the timeline for embryological cardiac development.
  2. Describe the formation of the primitive heart tube.
  3. Explain the embryological formation of the heart chambers in the normal cardiac development.
  4. Identify the normal fetal circulation.
  5. List components of the standard imaging pediatric guideline.
  6. Identify normal pediatric cardiac anatomy.
  7. Describe normal and abnormal variants of cardiac anatomy.
  8. Define terminology relating to cardiac anomalies.
  9. Describe the morphology of cardiac segments
  10. Identify the orientation of cardiac segments.
  11. Identify the connections of cardiac segments.
  12. List both atrial and ventricular septal defects.
  13. Identify the sonographic appearance of shunting lesions.
  14. Recognize hemodynamic anomalies related to shunting lesions in congenital heart disease.
  15. Describe venous anomalies with an emphasis on total anomalous pulmonary venous return/connection.
  16. Differentiate pathologic conditions associated with complete and partial atrioventricular septal defects.
  17. Differentiate pathologic conditions related to right and left heart anomalies.
  18. Identify abnormal hemodynamics related to right and left heart anomalies in pediatric echocardiography.
  19. Differentiate D-looped and congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries.
  20. Identify the sonographic appearance of pathologic conditions associated with conotruncal defects.
  21. Correlate disease process and patient presentation as they pertain to pathologic conditions.
  22. Demonstrate imaging techniques for primary surgical repairs.
  23. Discuss imaging techniques used in palliative procedures.
  24. Explain the use of imaging of interventional procedures before, during, and after the cath lab.
  25. Define the biometric measurements to be taken during a routine obstetrical ultrasound.
  26. Identify the appropriate landmarks for each biometric measurement.
  27. Demonstrate the fetal anatomy to be included in a routine obstetrical examination.
  28. Assess fetal situs in comparison to fetal heart orientation.
  29. List components of a fetal heart survey.
  30. Describe the most common maternal diseases that are associated with fetal heart anomalies.
  31. List fetal findings that warrant a detailed fetal heart evaluation.

Qualified Planners/Faculty

Jorge Garcia, MD, FACC, FASE

Jorge Garcia is a board-certified pediatric cardiologist and a Medical Director of AdventHealth for Children's Pediatric Echocardiography Lab in Orlando, Florida. He specializes in the use of fetal, pediatric and transesophageal echocardiography and stress tests for diagnosing congenital heart diseases in children, and he provides non-invasive cardiology treatments and event monitoring for patients with arrhythmias and other heart disorders. Dr. Jorge's credentials include his medical degree from the Universidad Central in Quito, Ecuador, pediatric residency training at the University of Florida Health Sciences Center in Jacksonville, and consecutive fellowships in cardiology and echocardiology at the University of Texas Children's Medical Center in Dallas.

Charlotte Henningsen, MS, RT(R), RDMS, RVT, FSDMS, FAIUM

Charlotte Henningsen has taught at Adventist University of Health Sciences for over 20 years. She has been a sonographer for 30 years and is also adjunct faculty to the Florida Hospital Emergency Medicine Residency Program the Florida Hospital Radiology Residency Program. She has served on the Boards of the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS) and the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM). She has also authored several articles published in the Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography, has written several chapters in textbooks, and co-authored the Clinical Guide to Sonography.

Genevieve Lee-Dickson, BS, RDCS

is a native Floridian, born in Miami and raised in the Everglades. She graduated from the University of Central Florida with a BS degree in Cardiopulmonary Sciences/ Respiratory Therapy. She was a respiratory therapist at Orlando Health for many years and began her fulltime career in echocardiography in 1987. She assisted in opening the Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children non-invasive cardiology department as a department manager in 1989. She has been directly involved in training sonographers in the Central Florida since the 1990’s. She moved to direct patient care in a private pediatric cardiology practice in 1994; and during that time, served as a clinical instructor in the area of pediatric cardiology for AdventHealth University until 2015. She is currently a cardiac sonographer at AdventHealth. She is a member of the ASE, SOPE, and FSRT. She maintains her Florida Respiratory Therapist license and is credentialed with the ARDMS in adult, pediatric, and fetal echocardiography.

Kelly Mumbert, MBA, ACS, RVT, RDCS, RCCS, FASE

is an associate professor at AdventHealth University where she has taught since 2012.  She graduated from Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences in 2003 and worked at Florida Hospital for over nine years.  After receiving her certification in adult echocardiography and vascular technology, Kelly went on to become certified in pediatric echocardiography.  She also obtained the advanced cardiac sonographer credentials. Kelly has also received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from the University of Central Florida.  She currently is a member of the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS) and a fellow with the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE).  She has continued to support to her profession by serving in the SDMS CME committee, reviewing for the JDMS, and speaking nationally and at local society meetings.

Marjorie Quevedo, BSDMS, RDMS, RDCS, RVT

is a Faculty Member in the department of Diagnostic Medical Sonography. She graduated from the Cardiovascular Sonography program from Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences in 2006 and then from the General Sonography Program at Florida Hospital College in 2007. Mrs. Quevedo also graduated from Adventist University of Health Sciences in 2015 with her Bachelors Degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Mrs. Quevedo holds credentials as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) in Abdomen and Obstetrics/Gynecology, Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) in Adult Echocardiography, and Registered Vascular Technician (RVT). She has worked for the Adventist Health hospital system in California as a Lead Sonographer and has worked for several years at varying private Physician offices. She currently is a member of the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS) and American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM), and volunteers for both organizations.  Mrs. Quevedo has been published in the Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JDMS).

Candice Ramnarace, BS, RDCS, RVT

is currently the Non-Invasive Pediatric Cardiovascular Supervisor at AdventHealth Orlando. She has over 13 years of experience in cardiovascular ultrasound. She holds registries in Adult Echo, Pediatric Echo, and Vascular. Candice also recently earned a bachelor’s degree at AdventHealth University with the hopes of growing within the pediatric field. Prior to and while in this position as Supervisor, she continues to play an integral part to the Cardiovascular department with direct patient care services. Candice is extremely passionate and has an interest in pediatric ultrasound and its wide range of complex congenital heart disease. She participates in transthoracic, transesophageal and stress echocardiograms, three-dimensional echocardiography and is also a member of the structural heart team. Candice is the Technical Director of the Pediatric department and is responsible for IAC documentations and reaccreditation. She is also currently involved in a pediatric research study at her institution.

Marie Smith, BS, RDMS, RDCS, RVT

is currently the Clinical Coordinator for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program at AdventHealth University (AHU) where she has been employed for 4 years. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography in 2018 from AdventHealth University where she also graduated Cum Laude from the General Sonography program in 1996 and graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Cardiovascular Program at AHU in 1997. She holds the following credentials: Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) in Abdomen and Obstetrics/Gynecology, Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) in Adulty Echo, and Registered Vascular Technician (RVT). She has worked for the AdventHealth system, several years of contract work at varying Physician offices, as well as a Clinical Applications Specialist with Siemens Medical Solutions. She currently is a member of the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS).
