This presentation is intended to provide a brief history of CT development, give an overview of CT system components and scanner generations, and describe general principles related to image formation.

NOTE: This activity may be available in multiple formats or from different sponsors; individuals may not repeat and report a self-learning activity for credit twice in the same biennium.

Upon successful completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
  1. Relate the historical development of computed tomography to modern innovations in scanner speed and efficiency.
  2. Compare and contrast the various CT scanner generations relative to technology development.
  3. Recall the key components of the CT scanner, identifying the function of each.
  4. Describe the various methods of image acquisition, relating their advantages and disadvantages.
  5. Explain the process by which the CT image data is reconstructed and displayed.
  6. Identify techniques used to modify the reconstructed image.

Leanna Neubrander, M.H.Sc, RT(R)(CT)

Leanna Neubrander has been a faculty member at AdventHealth University (AHU) since 2006.  Ms. Neubrander is an Associate Professor of Imaging Sciences and lead instructor for the CT courses in the B.S. Radiologic Sciences Program.  Ms. Neubrander graduated with her A.S. degree in Radiography and B.S. degree in Radiologic Sciences from AHU and obtained her master's degree from Nova Southeastern University in Health Sciences with a concentration in Higher Education. She is certified and proficient in Radiography and Computed Tomography (CT), and is trained in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).  Ms. Neubrander serves as the Educator on the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) CT Exam Committee.
