BIO2: Introduction to Ethical Thought

This course is an introduction for clergy/chaplains to the history and major resources of bioethical decision-making, including some standing bioethical debates as they relate to health care. This course will also address some of the historical and modern-day codes and theories of medical ethics. This course will challenge your thinking regarding what is a “good” or “bad” ethical approach.

Upon successful completion of this module, the participant will be:
  1. introduced to a portion of the history relating to medical ethics.
  2. introduced to some of the codes and virtues that have been pondered over the centuries.
  3. more aware of the impact of ethical decisions on care providers in the healthcare setting.
  4. begin to understand more regarding the dilemma faced in health care to offer the best care to patients and families while adhering to bioethical expectations.

Andy Lampkin, Ph.D.

Andy Lampkin, Ph.D., is Professor of Religion at AdventHealth University where he teaches bioethics and Christian social ethics. He is a Seventh-day Adventist Minister with more than two decades of professional ministerial experience. He holds an undergraduate degree from Oakwood University, a Divinity degree, and a Doctor Philosophy in Religion, Ethics and Society from Vanderbilt University.
