CMI-03: Building Supportive Caring Relationships

This course will explore the differences between casual relating and developing a supportive and caring relationship that invites exploration of meaning making and emotional sharing. This course also introduces the basics of relating as a foundation for clinical mission integration in the healthcare context.

Upon successful completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Recognize the difference between casual and supportive conversation.
  2. Apply the skills for building trust in supportive relationships.
  3. Acknowledge the key elements of a supportive conversation.
  4. Describe the Three-Directional Task of being present in relationship.
  5. Understand the emotional literacy in developing supportive relationships.

Juleun A. Johnson, D.Min

Dr. Juleun A. Johnson is the Director of Mission and Ministry for Florida Hospital’s (FH) South Market and lead chaplain at Florida Hospital Celebration Health.

Prior to his current assignment, Dr. Johnson served as a staff chaplain at Florida Hospital Orlando in the Cardiac service line. He served as a Seventh-day Adventist parish pastor for 13 years in Alabama, Florida, Illinois, and Mississippi. He completed his 4 Unit Clinical Pastoral Education Internship and Residency at University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital a Level 1 trauma facility.

He is a graduate of Oakwood University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theology, a graduate of Andrews University with a Master’s of Divinity degree, and a graduate of the Claremont School of Theology with a Doctor of Ministry Degree. His doctoral dissertation: Pastors As Caring Bridge Builders in Healthcare Settings focuses on end-of-life care education for pastors and the community at-large.

He is an adjunct professor in the Master of Healthcare Administration degree program at Adventist University of Health Sciences in Orlando, FL. He is also a doctoral advisor at Denver Seminary. He served as an adjunct professor of World Religions at Gulf Coast State College in Panama City, FL.

He is married to his college sweetheart the former Melissa Morrison and they are the proud parents of two daughters.

Ramona Reynolds, M.Div., MHA, BCC, ACPE Certified Educator

Ramona Reynolds serves as Executive Director of Ministry Education and Research for AdventHealth Central Division and The Ministry Education and Research at AdventHealth University. She is a Board Certified Chaplain with the Association of Professional Chaplains, an ACPE Certified Educator and an ordained minister in the Baptist tradition. Her Master of Divinity degree was completed at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY, and her Master of Healthcare Administration was completed at AdventHealth University in Orlando, FL.
