Effective Planning and Use of Stress Debriefing with the Interdisciplinary Team

This course is designed to assist in the decisions surrounding preparing for and conducting a stress debriefing for Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) members.

Module 1: Introduction 

  • Topic 1.1 The importance of stress debriefing (including research synopsis).
  • Topic 1.2 The benefits of debriefing and what debriefing isn’t.
  • Topic 1.3 Are you prepared?

Module 2: Assessing the need.        

  • Topic 2.1 When to utilize stress debriefing with the Interdisciplinary Team (IDT).
  • Topic 2.2 Examining the situation and level of distress.
    • What event/events precipitated the elevated level of stress.
    • What does the stress response from the team look like? Behaviors, errors, attitudes, etc.               

Module 3: The Approach.

  • Topic 3.1 Communicating with IDT leadership and coordination of session.
  • Topic 3.2 Organizing and preparing around location, group size, composition, facilitator/s and timing.
  • Topic 3.3 Suggested stress support/debriefing outline.

Module 4: Post-Debriefing Factors

  • Topic 4.1 Appraisal of effectiveness and possible future modifications.
  • Topic 4.2 Considerations around post-debriefing care.
  • Topic 4.3 Follow-up considerations.

We will explore:

  1. Summary of research focused on stress responses of the IDT, notably during pandemic.
  2. The need for personal preparation and process in planning a debriefing session.
  3. Guidelines for assessing when a stress debriefing is necessary.
  4. How to coordinate communication, scheduleing, group size and composition of a stress debriefing.
  5. A sample debriefing outline.
  6. Reassessment and follow-up decisions.
  7. Suggestions for evaluating the effectiveness of the session(s).

Theresa E. Hood, M.Div., BCC

Terry is a Board-Certified Chaplain and Education Specialist/adjunct faculty member for Clinical Pastoral Education at AdventHealth Orlando, FL.  She has a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Central Florida and a Master of Divinity Degree from Reformed Theological Seminary. She became a Board-Certified Chaplain in May 2006.  She has also completed the Specialty Certificate Program for Palliative Care Chaplaincy in 2015. In addition to healthcare chaplaincy, Terry has served as pastor for The First United Church of Christ in Orlando and The First Congregational Church of Plainfield, CT.  In her previous career, she was a certified financial planner. She has lived and worked in Connecticut, Rhode Island, North Carolina, and Florida. Terry is an ordained minister in the Congregational Church, United Church of Christ.

Gustavo Mujica, M.Div.

Gustavo Mujica is passionate about helping others to connect with their meaning, purpose, and hopes. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Biblical Pastoral Theology in Antillean University in Puerto Rico. Later, he worked as a hospice chaplain while he continued discovering God’s invitation to practice “the ministry of presence”.

Gustavo earned his Master of Divinity in 2019 from Andrews University, MI. Early 2020 he started as a staff Chaplain at AdventHealth Orlando.  After two years, he received an invitation to lead an amazing team of chaplains for AdventHealth East Orlando where he currently works. Gustavo strongly believes in collaborating with other disciplines in the hospital to provide excellent care to the whole person with uncommon compassion.

When Gustavo is not working at the hospital or in meetings, you can find him barbecuing with his friends & neighbors, doing yard work with his wife Brenda, playing with his English Bulldog “Mía”, or relaxing by the beach (his favorite escape place).

Rodrigo Serveli, M. Div.

Rodrigo was born in Brazil. He graduated from with a degree in theology at SALT-IAENE in 2004. He completed his Master of Divinity from Andrews University in 2016. He is currently completing his Doctor of Ministry at Fuller Theological Seminary.  Over the last few years, Rodrigo has worked as a pastor and missionary. At this time, he is a chaplain at our AdventHealth East Orlando Campus.

Jean Woolky, M. Div.

Jean was born and raised in Gonaives, Haiti. I grew up in Lake Worth, Florida. I completed my undergraduate studies at Oakwood University, obtaining a BA in Theology with an emphasis in chaplaincy and a minor in Psychology. At Oakwood, I was privileged to be a student missionary, where I traveled domestically and internationally, providing disaster and medical relief. I Completed my Master of Divinity at Andrews theological seminary in 2015. I began full-time chaplaincy ministry in 2016 at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Berrien Springs MI. In November of 2021, I joined the Pastoral Care team of AdventHealth East Orlando Campus, where I serve as the Emergency Department chaplain.  I am married to the former Fatima J. Dorcelan, and we have two children.
