CPE Orientation 02: Advanced Directives Training for CPE Students

This course was designed for new CPE students at AdventHealth. This course gives an overview of Advance Directives and federal legislation as it addresses end of life care. It defines various terms associated with Advance Directives and the individuals that may be included with patient end of life decisions. This is a requirement for all new pastoral employees serving within the AdventHealth System.

NOTE: This is a requirement for all new CPE Students serving within the AdventHealth Central Region.

Upon successful completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Understand Advance Directives and Federal legislation.
  2. Elaborate on terminal condition and vegetative states.
  3. Discuss life prolonging procedures and the individual players for patient decision making.
  4. Understand and enforce Advance Directives as implemented at AdventHealth.
  5. Contrast and compare a Living Will verses a DNR order.
  6. Demonstrate the elements of compassionate care with patients and patient's family in end of life situations.

Theresa E. Hood, M.Div., BCC

Terry is a Board-Certified Chaplain and Education Specialist/adjunct faculty member for Clinical Pastoral Education at AdventHealth Orlando, FL.  She has a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Central Florida and a Master of Divinity Degree from Reformed Theological Seminary. She became a Board-Certified Chaplain in May 2006.  She has also completed the Specialty Certificate Program for Palliative Care Chaplaincy in 2015. In addition to healthcare chaplaincy, Terry has served as pastor for The First United Church of Christ in Orlando and The First Congregational Church of Plainfield, CT.  In her previous career, she was a certified financial planner. She has lived and worked in Connecticut, Rhode Island, North Carolina, and Florida. Terry is an ordained minister in the Congregational Church, United Church of Christ.

Ramona Reynolds, M.Div., MHA, BCC, ACPE Certified Educator

Executive Director, Ministry Education and Research, AdventHealth: Ramona is a Cooperative Baptist Minister, originally from SE Kentucky. In addition to her ministry at AdventHealth, Ramona is the mother of a teenage son, wife of a caring husband, daughter of an always supportive father, and sister to two sisters and three brothers with whom she shares multiple group text threads. She appreciates now living in Florida particularly between October and April, especially when the sun is warm, the breezes are cool, and the humidity is non-existent. Ramona has been a team member at AdventHealth since 2001 when she came here as a student.

You are encouraged to print and save your certificate for your portfolio as required by your licensing body. Interdisciplinary accredited activities, activities having multiple accreditors, will be listed individually on the Certificate of Completion.
