Moral Courage: Carl Wilkens: ADU Colloquium

In a powerful story of love and courage in the midst of terrible violence, Carl Wilkens and his wife Teresa bear witness to the history of genocide in Rwanda in the early 1990s. Wilkens weaves footage from a documentary of their experience with his account of the family’s development and relief work in Rwanda prior to the genocide, and relief work after. Wilkens was the sole American who remained in the country during the violence.

    Carl Wilkens is the former head of the Adventist Development and Relief Agency International in Rwanda. In 1994, he was the only American who chose to remain in the country after the Rwandan genocide began.

    Since 1978, when he first went to Africa as part of a college volunteer program, Wilkens has spent 13 years working on the continent. After training as a high-school teacher he later went back to night school and earned an MBA at the University of Baltimore.
