During his career Dick Tibbits pastored in New England, then became a pastoral educator and clinical counselor at Kettering Medical Center. He then moved to Florida where he was instrumental in developing the CREATION health program at Celebration health before becoming the Chief People Officer at Florida Hospital Orlando. From there he went to Loma Linda University Medical Center to open a new hospital as its COO. He then finished his career as the COO/CEO at Florida Hospital Tampa. Dick has conducted original research on forgiveness and heart disease; which he presented at the National Institutes of Health, Harvard University, The Mayo Clinic, Duke University, Loma Linda University, and Stanford University. This work was published in his book Forgive to Live: How Forgiveness Can Save Your Life which is currently printed in four languages. His latest work on the Stress Recovery Effect is written out of his wealth of experience working with those who must perform in extreme stress situations. Both by experience and profession, Dick is a qualified writer and a nationally sought after speaker both nationally and internationally.

  2. Identify national data with specific focus in anger and heart disease.
  3. Recognize how practicing forgiveness can reduce anger.
  4. Describe clinical research demonstrating how practicing forgiveness can reduce blood pressure.
  5. Explain how choices have consequences.
  6. Identify positive motivations for forgiveness and the physical consequences of not forgiving.
  7. Summarize the steps of forgiveness from the cognitive behavior perspective.
  8. Distinguish between the consequences of choosing to forgive and the consequences of not choosing to forgive.
  9. Relate how the cognitive approach of re-framing is a foundation of forgiveness.
  10. Analyze how feelings shape perception.
  11. Assess the difference between perception and reality.
  12. Define both what forgiveness is and what it is not.
  13. Discuss how choices can be conscious and unconscious.
  14. Express how the choice to forgive benefits individuals more than choosing to blame for problems.

Dick Tibbits, DMin, MDiv.

has a doctoral degree in psychotherapy from Andover-Newton in Boston as well as a MDiv degree in theology from Andrews University in Michigan.  Dick is an ordained minister, a licensed professional mental health counselor, a certified clinical pastoral educator as well as an author and a speaker.  Currently Dick is an executive coach for hospital administrators and a performance coach to some of the world’s premier motorsports racers.
