This course is part of the Anatomy and Physiology Review for NMT/RT. This course on the renal system presents an overview of the anatomy and physiology of the renal system, patient assessment, and common diagnostic procedures for renal evaluation. Course content includes the kidney's role in forming and excreting urine, maintaining fluid, and electrolyte balance, producing hormones, and regulating acid-base in balance.

Upon successful completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
  1. Differentiate between the macro and microstructures of the kidney.
  2. Describe the role of the kidney in arterial blood pressure regulation.
  3. Explain the physiology involved in urine formation, maintaining acid-base, fluid, and electrolyte balances.
  4. Identify patient symptoms, treatment, and care issues with fluid and electrolyte imbalances.
  5. Discuss the kidney's endocrine functions.
  6. Recognize various laboratory tests and identify their strengths for renal evaluation.
  7. Explain the patient preparation and care protocols specific to common laboratory and diagnostic procedures.

Qualified Planners/Faculty

Lynn A. Rowe, PhD, RN

Dr. Rowe has been an adjunct faculty member with AdventHealth University (AHU) since 1997 and fulltime faculty member since January 2018. Her degrees include a BSN-Florida State University, MSN-University of Phoenix (Education, and Leadership) and PhD for University of Arizona (Biological Injury). Her research interests include issues in complications of transplantation, and multiple other topics surrounding the practice of nursing. Dr. Rowe has over 30 years of clinical experience including cardiovascular progressive care, multisystem intensive care unit and liver, pancreas, and kidney transplantation. 12 years as a unit/system educator for Neurointensive care and Multisystem ICU and 5 years in support in the nursing Research department. Dr. Rowe continues to support nursing practice through collaborative activities with various hospital campuses and serves as the chair of the Scientific review committee to review the collaborative efforts of university faculty..

Marika Whitaker, DNP, MHA, RN

Marika Whitaker has been nursing faculty in the Department of Nursing at Adventist University of Health Sciences now AdventHealth University since 2009. Ms. Whitaker became a nurse in 2001, graduating from Seminole Community College with an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN). Marika’s specialty is emergency medicine with 18 years of experience. In 2008 Marika obtained a Bachelor in the Science of Nursing (BSN), and in 2010 received a Master in the Science of Nursing (MSN) and a Master in Healthcare Administration (MHA) from the University of Phoenix. In 2010, Marika became nursing faculty at AdventHealth University. Marika has remained nursing faculty teaching various nursing courses: Adult Health 1, Pharmacology, Informatics, and Foundations of Nursing. In 2021, Marika completed her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) with her scholarly project focusing on healthcare organization system changes to increase cardiac rehabilitation enrollment in the acute care setting.
