Disparities in cardiovascular healthcare exist: they are pervasive, entrenched in society, and documented by numerous studies. This course for healthcare professionals, offers a review of the research; highlights some specific aspects of the problem including risk factors, diagnostic and treatment practices, and morbidity/mortality rates; and describes some of the national, community, and healthcare actions that can improve cardiovascular healthcare for all Americans.

  4. Identify potential actions on both a local and national level to address this problem.

Revisioning Author: Glenice DeBique, Ph.D.

Dr. Glenice DeBique is a professor in the Health and Biomedical Sciences Department at AdventHealth University. Her responsibilities include teaching assignments at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the areas of Introduction to Sociology; Multicultural Applications for the Health Sciences; and Cultural and Ethical Considerations for Health Sciences.  Dr. DeBique holds credentials in Teacher Education, BSc in Education and MSc in Education in Education, and in 1997, Dr. DeBique received her Ph. D. (Education) from Washington State University. She continues to serve the wider community along with her students in service-learning experiences through the IMPACT- Innovative Ministries with Parents, Administrators, Children and Teachers in the Orlando area, in addition to work done with the Orlando Junior Achievement program. Dr. DeBique has had experience in studies abroad program, taking students to West Africa. Dr. DeBique received the President’s Award (WSU) in leadership and service for community work in the Pacific Northwest as well as the Teaching Excellence Award while at WSU. Dr. DeBique is ranked among Who is Who Among America’s Teachers as well as a past member of Phi Delta Kappa Educational organization. Dr. DeBique has been nominated for the Campus Compact: Campus Community Partnership Award for Service Learning, Thomas Ehrlich Civically Engaged Faculty Award (2014 and 16). She also received the Spirituality Award from ADU (2009). Dr. DeBique’s research interests include community engagement initiatives, Teaching and Learning educational practice and theory as well as issues in diversity and cultural constructs.

Revisioning Author: Pilar Erstling, MSN, RN

Professor Erstling has been full-time faculty since the Fall of 2015, but she started as an adjunct clinical instructor of obstetrics in 2013. She has been an obstetrics nurse for 24 years, so she naturally teaches in the Nursing of the Childbearing family course. She worked in Labor and Delivery at Florida Hospital Orlando for 10 years prior to joining the AHU family. She received her BSN from Florida State University in 1993. And she received her MSN in Nurse Midwifery from the University of Florida in 1998.

Jennifer H. Mieres, MD, FACC, FACP

Dr. Mieres, a native of Trinidad, West Indies, is the Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer & Medical Director for the Center for Learning and Innovation North Shore - LIJ Health System. Dr. Mieres has made countless appearances on national and local news outlets over the years about heart disease with a focus on women and heart disease. She is a founding member and was the first female president of the The American Society of Nuclear Cardiology (ASNC), a leader in education, advocacy and quality for the field of nuclear cardiology. Her book, Heart Smart for Black Women and Latinas: A Five-Week Program for Living a Heart-Healthy Lifestyle was released in 2008 to critical acclaim. An active volunteer for the American Heart Association (AHA) she is a national spokesperson for the AHA's Go Red for Women movement. Dr. Mieres was listed among New York's best doctors in 2009 and 2010 and was an Emmy nominee in 2003 for her production of the PBS documentary, "A Woman's Heart."

Revisioning Author: Marlene Watson, EdD, JD, MSN, RN

Dr. Marlene Watson has been a nursing faculty at AdventHealth University since 2005. In 1993, Dr. Watson earned her Diploma Nursing Degree at George Brown College in Toronto, Canada. She continued her education at the University of Central Florida where she earned her BSN in 1999 and MSN in 2003.  In 2014, Dr. Watson received her Doctor of Education from Nova Southeastern University and a Juris Doctorate from Barry University in 2018.

After receiving her law degree, she became an adjunct professor providing online instruction to students in their second and third year. Currently, she serves as a content reviewer for echelon®, and has been a clinical adjunct faculty for the University of Central Florida.

Dr. Watson is the founder and President of Youth United for Christ, a local 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit organization, whose mission is to mentor both children and youth. She has organized and participated in several mission trips to Haiti, where she and her team provided health related screenings and education. Additionally, she has coordinated many local community outreach events, serving displaced families in the community.
