Administering Blood Transfusions

This course focuses on the care and administration of blood and blood products. It will review the indications for transfusions, the appropriate use of blood and blood products, and the care and monitoring of a patient receiving blood and/or blood products.

Upon successful completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Identify indications for transfusions of whole blood, packed red blood cells, platelets, fresh-frozen plasma, and cryoprecipitated antihemophilic factor.
  2. State risks associated with blood transfusions.
  3. Describe care of the patient during a blood transfusion.
  4. Identify signs and symptoms indicative of a blood transfusion reaction.
  5. Identify characteristics of specific transfusion reactions and describe the appropriate treatment.

Nancy Haugen, PhD, RN, CCRN

Nancy Haugen is an Assistant Professor & ABSN Program Chair School of Nursing for Samuel Merritt University in Oakland, California. Her nursing experience spans over 30 years in a variety of areas including critical care, post anesthesia care, infection control, employee health, and staff development. She received her Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing from the University of Florida in 2000 and certified as a Critical Care Nurse. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, American Nurses Association, Florida Nurses Association, American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, National League for Nursing, and Southern Society of Nurse Researchers.

Deborah Torres-Logan, DNP, APRN, ANP-BC

Ms. Deborah Torres-Logan is an adult nurse practitioner and works in the office setting seeing vascular patients. She graduated from the University of  Florida in Gainesville, FL with her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. She graduated from the University of South Florida in Tampa, FL with her Master of Science in Nursing degree and Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. She graduated from Florida Hospital College of Health Science in Orlando, FL with her Associate of Science in Nursing degree. She is a former Instructor of  Nursing at Adventist Health University.  She is a member of the American Association of Nurse practitioners and the International Nursing Honor Society, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI). She was the president of the Nursing Honor Society at Advent Health University in 2014-2015.  During her presidency, the nursing honor society applied to become a chapter of  STTI and was approved.  She is a peer-reviewer for the Journal of American Association of Nurse Practitioners. She has been on clinical mission trips to Dominican Republic and Haiti.
