This HIV/AIDS course is designed for healthcare professionals seeking to deepen their understanding of clinical management and current evidence-based treatment regimens for patients living with HIV. The curriculum covers antiretroviral therapy (ART), symptom management, and the treatment of concurrent opportunistic and co-infections.

Participants will receive an overview of key components of clinical management, the major approved antiretroviral drug classes, and important considerations related to ART. The course concludes with a review of current pharmacologic options used to prevent and manage opportunistic infections in individuals with HIV/AIDS.

Upon successful completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Describe the clinical management of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected patient.
  2. Name the various antiretroviral drug categories, their recommended treatment regimens, and the considerations and side effects of each.
  3. Define antiretroviral therapy (ART) and its preferred components, as well as identify therapy guidelines.
  4. Identify the prophylaxis medications used to prevent co-infections and opportunistic infections.
  5. Identify the common opportunistic and co-infections that may occur in the HIV+ person, and the treatment for each.

Revisioning Author: Janelle L Cooney, DNP, RN, CCRN

Dr. Cooney is the ANCC Accredited Provider Program Director (APPD) for Professional Nursing Development and Continuing Education at AdventHealth University Division echelon©. With over 30 years of nursing experience, she has built a distinguished career in pediatric critical care nursing, leadership, and nursing education. Her expertise spans a broad range of roles, including her recent position as Manager of Nursing Professional Development at AdventHealth New Smyrna Beach (FL), where she served for five years. In this capacity, she contributed to the growth and development of nursing education programs while also co-directing the Pathways to Excellence program. Her clinical leadership experience includes a decade of service as the Assistant Nurse Manager at the AdventHealth for Children- Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), where she played a pivotal role in managing critical care for pediatric patients.

Additionally, Dr. Cooney has served as an adjunct professor at ECPI, teaching associate degree in nursing (ADN) courses in Pediatrics and facilitating clinical simulations to enhance the practical skills of future nurses.

A dedicated and engaged nursing professional, Dr. Cooney is an active member of several professional organizations, including Sigma Theta Tau International, the Association for Nursing Professional Development (ANPD), and the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN). Her deep commitment to nursing education, professional development, and quality patient care continues to drive her passion for advancing the nursing profession.

Jeffrey P. Garrett, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC

A current member of the American Academy of HIV Medicine, Jeffery brings to this course his experience and knowledge from the last 15 years of practice devoted to infectious diseases with a special interest in research and treatment of viral infections including: HIV, viral hepatitis and herpes virus disease. He has been with the Orlando Immunology Center since 2011 and has updated this course with the latest information on HIV and AIDS. He received his ARNP/FNP with a Master’s of Science in Nursing from Florida State University College of Nursing, Bachelors of Science in Nursing – Summa cum Laude from Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences, and his Associate Degree in Nursing (RN Track) High Honors from Seminole State College. He also is a member of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care, CCNIP, and the prestigious Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society of Nursing.

Madeline Sawin is currently an Assistant Professor/Clinical Instructor in Nursing at AdventHealth University. She received her MSN from the University of Central Florida and BSN from the University of Puerto Rico College of Nursing. Marika Whitaker, DNP, MHA, RN

Marika Whitaker has been nursing faculty in the Department of Nursing at Adventist University of Health Sciences now AdventHealth University since 2009. Ms. Whitaker became a nurse in 2001, graduating from Seminole Community College with an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN). Marika’s specialty is emergency medicine with 18 years of experience. In 2008 Marika obtained a Bachelor in the Science of Nursing (BSN), and in 2010 received a Master in the Science of Nursing (MSN) and a Master in Healthcare Administration (MHA) from the University of Phoenix. In 2010, Marika became nursing faculty at AdventHealth University. Marika has remained nursing faculty teaching various nursing courses: Adult Health 1, Pharmacology, Informatics, and Foundations of Nursing. In 2021, Marika completed her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) with her scholarly project focusing on healthcare organization system changes to increase cardiac rehabilitation enrollment in the acute care setting.
