Imaging Techniques: PET/CT

Imaging Techniques: PET/CT is designed to provide imaging professionals and radiation technologists with a basic understanding of the components, theory, use, and benefits of PET/CT technology. It begins with a discussion of the theory and development of PET and CT scanners and the steps that led to merging the technologies to produce PET/CT. Other topics include a brief look at some of the PET/CT systems currently available; the image acquisition process, including whole body scans, heart and brain studies, radiation therapy planning; image formation and reconstruction, list mode theory, as well as acquisition and processing. The final module addresses quality control procedures necessary for maintaining and operating PET/CT equipment.

You must be licensed in the state of Florida to report an activity that is only approved by the state. Upon successful completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
  1. Describe key points of Coincidence Theory for PET imaging.
  2. Identify specific qualities of 2D and 3D imaging.
  3. Recognize several methods of reconstruction and specific information regarding each.
  4. Describe the key components of computed tomography including slip ring technology.
  5. Describe the history and development of PET/CT and its clinical applications.
  6. Identify clinically used PET scintillators and the criteria for PET crystals.
  7. Describe acquisition protocols for whole body scans, heart and brain studies, and radiation therapy planning.    
  8. Recognize the theory of list mode imaging and how dynamic-, cardiac-, and respiratory-gated studies are acquired and processed.
  9. Identify critical steps, both process and purpose, for PET/CT equipment quality control.

Joseph R. Hawkins, M.S.Ed, CNMT

Mr. Hawkins graduated with a Bachelor of Science from Rochester Institute of Technology and a Master of Science in Education from St. Joseph’s College of Maine. He is the Director of Institutional Effectiveness and Accreditation at AdventHealth University. Previously, he served as an Associate Professor and the Program Director for the Nuclear Medicine Technology Program from its inception in 2001 until 2019. Mr. Hawkins has over 30 years of experience in Nuclear Medicine as an educator, technologist, and industry representative. He is currently the Secretary/Treasurer of the board for the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology (JRCNMT). He is active in the Technologist Section of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) having served as Chair of both the Entry Level Curriculum Committee and the Student Membership Task Force and as a member of the National Council of Representatives. He has presented at numerous national, regional, and state meetings, and was awarded the AHU Faculty Merit Award for Professional Service and the SNMMI Outstanding Educator Award.

Deborah Mills serves as a Clinical Coordinator for the Nuclear Medicine Technology program at AdventHealth University. She received her certificate in Nuclear Medicine Technology from AdventHealth University’s inaugural class in 2002 and her Master of Science degree in Health Services Administration from the University of Central Florida. Ms. Mills has over 17 years of experience in the field of Nuclear Medicine as a Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist (CNMT), Certified Nuclear Cardiology Technologist (NCT), and a member of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging.

Leanna Neubrander, M.H.Sc, RT(R)(CT)

Leanna Neubrander is the Director of Online Strategic Development and Engagement for AdventHealth University and has been a faculty member at AdventHealth University (AHU) since 2006.  Ms. Neubrander was the Associate Professor of Imaging Sciences and lead instructor for the CT courses in the B.S. Radiologic Sciences Program.  Ms. Neubrander graduated with her A.S. degree in Radiography and B.S. degree in Radiologic Sciences from AHU and obtained her master's degree from Nova Southeastern University in Health Sciences with a concentration in Higher Education. She is certified and proficient in Radiography and Computed Tomography (CT), and is trained in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).  Ms. Neubrander serves as the Educator on the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) CT Exam Committee.
