Women and Heart Disease

This course is for all healthcare professionals who wish to expand their understanding of the awareness issues, risk factors, and treatment options for women and heart disease. Course content describes gender differences in the epidemiology of heart disease, the risk assessment for women developing CHD (coronary heart disease), as well as appropriate interventions and treatment options. AHA guidelines for non-invasive diagnosis and prevention of CHD in women are also presented.

Upon successful completion of this program, the participant will be able to:

  1. Recognize the prevalence of heart disease in women.
  2. Describe the differences in epidemiology between women and men in heart disease.
  3. Identify the risk categories and criteria for each category.
  4. Identify those diagnostic tools best for women in each risk category.
  5. Explain the treatment options available to women with heart disease.
  6. Provide female patients with appropriate information for the prevention of heart disease.

Jennifer H. Mieres, MD, FACC, FACP

Dr. Mieres, a native of Trinidad, West Indies, is the Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer & Medical Director for the Center for Learning and Innovation North Shore - LIJ Health System. Dr. Mieres has made countless appearances on national and local news outlets over the years about heart disease with a focus on women and heart disease. She is a founding member and was the first female president of the The American Society of Nuclear Cardiology (ASNC), a leader in education, advocacy and quality for the field of nuclear cardiology. Her book, Heart Smart for Black Women and Latinas: A Five-Week Program for Living a Heart-Healthy Lifestyle was released in 2008 to critical acclaim. An active volunteer for the American Heart Association (AHA) she is a national spokesperson for the AHA's Go Red for Women movement. Dr. Mieres was listed among New York's best doctors in 2009 and 2010 and was an Emmy nominee in 2003 for her production of the PBS documentary, "A Woman's Heart."

Revisioning Author: Lynette Woide, MSN, RN

Lynette Woide received her diploma of nursing from Fairview General Hospital School of Nursing.  She furthered her studies and obtained her BSN and MSN from the University of Phoenix.  Her professional career has focused on oncology. Lynette lives in Central Florida and now focuses her time working for echelon.
