Improving the Patient Experience in the Healthcare Setting

Based on the findings of a leading healthcare facilities, this course will help enhance the healthcare professional's ability to effectively communicate with patients in order to satisfy patients' needs and expectations. The course focuses on how to best communicate important and relevant information to a diverse patient population that will establish trust with the patient. Particular attention is given to the healthcare professional's role in communication, ethics, protocols, patient confidentiality, image quality, and professionalism.

Upon successful completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Identify specific needs of the patient, both for communication and comfort, and describe ways to meet those needs.
  2. Describe appropriate strategies to work with special needs patients, including issues related to age and circumstances that require special consideration/handling.
  3. Indicate procedures and protocols that are essential to ensure accurate and appropriate patient service.
  4. Identify ways to let patients know their perspective is being considered.
  5. Describe steps to take to ensure that physicians' needs are met.
  6. Identify the issues related to maintaining a professional environment with peers, students, and patients, including patient confidentiality.

Jerry T. Shilling, MA, RT (R)

Mr. Shilling graduated from Webster University with a Master of Arts in Health Services Management. He has worked at Florida Hospital for the past nine years as the Assistant Director of Radiology. His resume includes 38 years of radiology experience in several hospitals with over 30 years in radiology leadership designing and implementing radiology services including diagnostic, nuclear, MRI, CT, mammography, PET, angio, and ultrasound. Mr. Shilling has also been responsible for the start-up of several radiology clinics and radiology services in physicians' offices.

Deena Slockett, MBA, EdD

Deena L. Slockett, MBA, EdD has spent over twenty years providing service and instruction in the areas of Radiologic Sciences, Business, Finance, Leadership and Organizational Strategies for Adventist University of Health Sciences. After starting her career in the clinical arena, she is now the Vice-Chair of the Department of Radiologic Sciences and professor for many traditional and on-line courses in radiologic sciences, business and healthcare administration. Dr. Slockett earned a Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Administration from Barry University, a Master of Business Administration from Webster University, and a Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership from Pepperdine University. Her research in servant leadership focuses on physicians and their perceived work life satisfaction. Dr. Slockett has presented her findings to audiences at the local, national and international platforms. She is an active speaker for topics on blended and online education technologies. Her career as a scholar, teacher, speaker, consultant and entrepreneur spans fields as diverse as radiologic sciences, educational technologies, small business, and succession planning. As an invited participant in focus groups, textbook manuscript reviews and as a review panelist for several international conferences Dr. Slockett is able to contribute to a broad scope of education and business practices.

Revisioning Author: M. Julie Talmadge, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, APPD

Dr. Talmadge is a family nurse practitioner with over 18 years of experience as a nurse practitioner. Her most recent clinical experience was in acute care working with a surgical residency program in Orlando, Florida. In 2013 she was awarded her Doctorate of Nursing Practice from the University of Florida in Gainesville. She currently is the Accredited Provider Program Director with echelon, Continuing Education and Professional Development, a Division of AdventHealth University. Dr. Talmadge is a member of the Central Florida Advanced Nursing Practice Council. She served on the Florida Board of Nursing, as appointed by the Governor (term 2018 - 2021). She has been adjunct faculty at the University of Central Florida and has precepted graduate nurse practitioner students.
