Description:
  HIV/AIDS Course Curriculum consists of 3 courses covering *Prevention, Transmission & Exposure Support, *Co- and Opportunistic Infections, and *Clinical Management & Treatment Protocols. Domestic Violence from the perspective of both the batterer and the victim; identify the physical, emotional, and psychological evidence of domestic violence; and recognize the populations affected by domestic violence. End of Life - Hospice and Palliative Care this dynamic course is for nurses who wish to learn the latest strategies for properly caring for and providing comfort to dying patients. Quality end of life care includes multiple dimensions. Reduction of Medical Errors is a requirement for license renewal focusing on patient safety, root cause analysis, and medical error prevention. Discussed will be the importance of replacing a culture of blame with a culture supporting honest reporting, thereby building a successful plan targeting known problems.
 

Learning Objectives

HIV/AIDS 3 Course Objectives (4 CEUs):
1. name and distinguish between AIDS transmission myths and realities;
2. identify at-risk populations;
3. explain the global impact of the AIDS pandemic;
4. identify preventative measures, stages, and treatment guidelines for HIV;
5. identify OSHA standards regarding bloodborne pathogens;
6. describe the stipulations of the Florida Omnibus Act;
7. describe co-infections that complicate HIV infection;
8. describe common AIDS-defining illnesses, their diagnosis and treatment;
9. describe lifestyle behaviors that delay (or prevent) AIDS-defining illnesses;
10.describe the clinical management of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected patient;
11.name the various antiretroviral drug categories, their recommended treatment regimens, and the considerations and side effects of each;
12.define highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) and its preferred components, as well as identify therapy guidelines;
13.identify the prophylaxis medications used to prevent co-infections and opportunistic infections; and
14.identify the common opportunistic and co-infections that may occur in the HIV positive person, and the treatment for each.
Domestic Violence Objectives (2 CEUs):
1. identify the significance of domestic violence, both within the population at large and within the medical setting;
2. list the types of domestic violence: their causes, behaviors, and processes;
3. identify the typical presentation of physical and psychological symptoms;
4. explain how to assess victims of domestic violence and document findings;
5. recognize how to locate local community resources that assist victims of domestic violence;
6. recognize that domestic violence affects millions of Americans, and it often goes unreported;
7. identify the various types of domestic violence prevalent in the U.S.;
8. recognize the populations affected by domestic violence, including intimate partner violence, elder abuse and neglect, and child abuse and neglect;
9. apply screening and intervention protocols appropriate for the potential victim of domestic violence; and
10. recognize the importance the role of the healthcare professional has in combating and eliminating domestic violence.
End of Life - Hospice and Palliative Care Objectives (2.5 CEUs):
1. describe the philosophy and characteristics of hospice care,
2. identify the role and responsibilities of the hospice nurse,
3. describe processes to properly assess pain and provide effective pain management options,
4. define aspects of palliative care,
5. identify the holistic needs of the patient,
6. describe the role of the patient's family, and
7. state the basic legal and financial aspects of hospice.
Reduction of Medical Errors Objectives (3 CEUs):
1. describe the magnitude of medical errors and the effect on patient safety,
2. describe processes to improve patient outcomes,
3. recognize error prone situation/processes,
4. identify factors that impact the occurrence of errors,
5. define the process and benefit of multi-causal analysis (root causes),
6. describe his/her responsibility for reporting medical errors as related to the policies and procedures of his/her particular facility,
7. identify safety needs of special populations,
8. discuss educational needs of patients/families, and
9. discuss the importance of public education regarding medical errors.
