By the end of this course the student will be able to
1. discuss the causes of anemia in the critically ill patient,
2. identify indications for transfusions of whole blood, packed red blood cells, platelets, fresh-frozen plasma, and cryoprecipitated antihemophilic factor,
3. describe risks associated with blood transfusions,
4. discuss care of the patient during a blood transfusion,
5. identify signs and symptoms indicative of a blood transfusion reaction, and
6. discuss treatment of transfusion reactions.
