  Explore the process of administering blood products, care for the patient receiving them, and the risk factors during administration and in follow-up care. This course focuses on the care and administration of blood and blood products to the critically ill patient. It will review the indications for transfusions, the appropriate use of blood and blood products, and the care and monitoring of a patient receiving blood and/or blood products.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course the student will be able to 1. discuss the causes of anemia in the critically ill patient, 2. identify indications for transfusions of whole blood, packed red blood cells, platelets, fresh-frozen plasma, and cryoprecipitated antihemophilic factor, 3. describe risks associated with blood transfusions, 4. discuss care of the patient during a blood transfusion, 5. identify signs and symptoms indicative of a blood transfusion reaction, and 6. discuss treatment of transfusion reactions.
