The provision of comfort care to the dying is an active, desirable, and important skill - an integral component of nursing care.
Symptom assessment and management is a crucial nursing skill when caring for patients at the end of life.
Quality end of life care includes multiple dimensions – not only physical, but, psychological, social and spiritual, as well.
NOTE: This activity may be available in multiple formats or from different sponsors. ARRT regulations state that an individual may not repeat a self-learning activity for credit if it was reported in the same or any subsequent biennium. |

1. describe the philosophy and characteristics of hospice care,
2. identify the role and responsibilities of the hospice nurse,
3. describe processes to properly assess pain and provide effective pain management options,
4. define aspects of palliative care,
5. identify the holistic needs of the patient,
6. describe the role of the patient's family, and
7. state the basic legal and financial aspects of hospice.
