Upon completion of this course, participants will have learned that
• The kidney performs many vital functions within the body, when they are damaged or when they fail, the results are serious, complex, and often, life-threatening.
• Renal failure may be acute or chronic, and each type has stages or phases.
• There are several types of dialysis; each has advantages, disadvantages, and specific care issues.
• Kidney transplantation is used when other treatment options are no longer viable and is a complex surgical procedure with many potential complications for both the donor and the recipient.
• Nutritional modifications are needed for the patient following a renal transplant.
• Guidelines for using pharmacologics with patients suffering from renal disease are complex and are based on national and institutional protocols.
