This course is for Licensed Practical Nurses, Registered Nurses, Clinical Nurse Specialists, and the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse. This course fulfills the 2-hour continuing education requirement as stated in 64B9-5.013 for nursing license renewal.

Covered in this course is the Nurse Practice Act, the general scope of practice, nursing practice in the State of Florida, the discipline process related to nursing practice, and the general requirements for continuing licensure. Completing this course will also assist the participant in creating a professional plan for career maintenance and development within the limits of the law.

Upon successful completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Describe the legislative purpose for the Nurse Practice Act.
  2. Verbalize specific laws and rules related to the practice of nursing and nursing assisting.
  3. Identify the pertinent levels of nursing practice in the State and the general scope of practice of each.
  4. Understand the specific licensure requirements for the Nurse Licensure Compact.
  5. Discuss the general requirements for continuing licensure in the State.
  6. Differentiate between ethical and legal practice.
  7. Discuss the process for discipline related to nursing practice.
  8. Create a professional plan for career maintenance and development within the limits of the law.

Qualified Planners/Faculty

M. Julie Talmadge, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, APPD

Dr. Talmadge is a family nurse practitioner with over 18 years of experience as a nurse practitioner. Her most recent clinical experience was in acute care working with a surgical residency program in Orlando, Florida. In 2013 she was awarded her Doctorate of Nursing Practice from the University of Florida in Gainesville. She currently is the Accredited Provider Program Director with echelon, Continuing Education and Professional Development, a Division of AdventHealth University. Dr. Talmadge is a member of the Central Florida Advanced Nursing Practice Council. She served on the Florida Board of Nursing, as appointed by the Governor (term 2018 - 2021). She has been adjunct faculty at the University of Central Florida and has precepted graduate nurse practitioner students.
