Upper Extremity Venous Duplex Examination

Upper Extremity Venous Duplex Examination is designed to provide sonographers the information necessary to properly perform an upper extremity venous duplex examination. Participants of this course will learn the venous anatomy of the upper extremity; the hemodynamic characteristics of vessels and veins; as well as signs, symptoms, and risk factors of venous disease. Standard protocol will also be addressed.

NOTE for Imaging: This activity may be available in multiple formats or from different sponsors; individuals may not repeat and report a self-learning activity for credit twice in the same biennium. You must be licensed in the state of Florida to report an activity that is only approved by the state. If this activity is also approved by an organization that ARRT has approved to evaluate CE, select that organization’s name, as opposed to the state licensing agency name.

Upon successful completion of this course, the participant will be able to: 

  1. Identify venous anatomy of the upper extremity. 
  2. List physical findings associated with upper extremity venous thrombosis. 
  3. List the risk factors for developing venous thrombosis. 
  4. Identify normal and abnormal upper extremity venous hemodynamics.
  5.  Know the steps to perform an upper extremity venous duplex examination.

Ruben Martinez, EdD, RDCS, RVT

Ruben Martinez has served over 20 years in the healthcare education environment. During this time, he has had the opportunity to work as faculty in the specialty area of diagnostic medical sonography, provide administrative support for campus operations, and manage institutional resources as CFO. Ruben holds an AS in diagnostic medical sonography from AdventHealth University, a BS in computer science, and an MA in healthcare management from Webster University. He also has an EdD with emphasis in organizational leadership from NOVA Southeastern. Ruben is passionate about the impact of education and is committed to this cause.

Revisioning Author: Kelly Mumbert, MBA, ACS, RVT, RDCS. RCCS. FASE

Kelly Mumbert is an associate professor at AdventHealth University where she has taught since 2012.  She graduated from Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences in 2003 and worked at Florida Hospital for over nine years.  After receiving her certification in adult echocardiography and vascular technology, Kelly went on to become certified in pediatric echocardiography.  She also obtained the advanced cardiac sonographer credentials. Kelly has also received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from the University of Central Florida.  She currently is a member of the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS) and a fellow with the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE).  She has continued to support to her profession by serving in the SDMS CME committee, reviewing for the JDMS, and speaking nationally and at local society meetings.
